The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS)–South Region, has one full‑time and one part‑time Licensed Practical Nurse positions located at Shunpike Road in Cromwell, CT.

Schedule and Position Details

19572 FT 2nd Shift – Wednesday – Saturday: 3:00 p.m. – 11:45 p.m. (Regular days off Sunday – Tuesday)

97080 PT 3rd Shift – Wednesday & Thursday: 11:30 p.m. – 8:15 a.m. (Regular days off Friday – Tuesday)

Must be flexible to meet the needs of the agency.

Compensation and Benefits

Base annual salary plus a yearly retention bonus of $600, paid in two installments (July and December) for LPNs permanently assigned to second and third shift after one year of service.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)

In a state facility this class is accountable for rendering bedside care or mental health services to individuals with physical disabilities and/or an intellectual disability in instances where the services of a registered nurse are not required.

Examples of Duties

Assists doctors and nurses in the general care and treatment of individuals

Measuring doses and administering medications including insulin injections

Documenting medications using appropriate forms

Performing narcotic counts

Checking and administering intravenous medications as needed

Reporting changes in individuals to doctors

Ensuring that restraints are applied correctly

Transcribing doctors' medication orders

Dispensing certain medications in the doctor’s absence

Applying topical medication

Taking and charting temperatures, pulse, and respiration

Performing simple nursing treatments

Monitoring general individual needs including personal hygiene

Reporting on individual conditions and behavior

Keeping the unit safe and healthy

Administering enemas or suppositories

Performing Foley catheterization care

Orienting individuals concerning medications and their use

May performing emergency first aid

May driving individuals to necessary appointments/outings

Performing related duties as required

Additional duties: performing the full range of duties as described for Lead Developmental Services Worker or for Mental Health Assistant 1/2 depending on department.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Knowledge of practical nursing specialties and bedside care; various medications for individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities; infection control practices; nutrition and diets; medical and laboratory sciences.

Considerable interpersonal skills; oral communication and written skills.

Ability to keep records and lead staff.

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

License or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing or hold a Multistate or Compact Licensed Practical Nurse license.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with individuals with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities.

Experience communicating with non‑verbal individuals.

Experience with basic nursing skills including medication and nutrition via G‑Tube or J‑Tube; glucose monitoring, insulin administration; respiratory treatments, colostomy, cecostomy, urostomy care; wound care; and catheterization.

Experience supporting individuals that may exhibit mild to severe challenging behaviors.

Experience communicating internally and externally with a diverse population over the telephone and in written inquiries.

Experience in supervision of staff, including providing daily operational direction and work assignments.

Experience using Microsoft applications (Outlook, Excel, Teams, Word).

Special Requirements

Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver’s license for designated positions.

Working Conditions

Incumbents may be required to lift/restrain individuals; may have exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
