Job Description
TITLE: Special Education Teacher
LOCATION: S.P. North
The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district serving approximately 22,000 students with over 60 languages spoken in students’ homes. KCKPS includes 28 elementary, 7 middle, 5 college and career academies/high schools, and offers the top‑ranked Sumner Academy.
JOB GOAL: To provide students with knowledge, information, skills, and a sense of self‑worth and dignity to succeed as they transition from high school to the community.
Essential Functions
Advocate for the rights of students with special needs.
Develop and maintain positive professional relationships with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and service providers.
Plan instructional programs, including individual plans outlined in students’ Individual Education Programs.
Serve as a liaison between the school and the community.
Lead I.E.P./annual review meetings, ensuring parental and student input and notifying service providers per local guidelines.
Act as an active member of the I.E.P. team for students served but not on the caseload.
Develop and maintain all I.E.P.s in accordance with federal, state, and local guidelines.
Maintain close communication with mainstream teachers and other service providers, keeping them informed of student progress.
Execute additional responsibilities assigned by the building administrator or special education administrator.
Model positive behavior for students in and out of the classroom.
Evaluate student performance through diagnostic testing for annual reviews, eligibility staffing, and quarterly I.E.P. updates.
Monitor student progress in mainstreamed classes.
Assist in establishing class schedules.
Supervise, evaluate, and train paraprofessionals as assigned.
Request equipment and supplies necessary to meet objectives outlined on students’ I.E.P.s.
Demonstrate curriculum knowledge and effective teaching strategies.
Implement behavioral intervention plans as needed.
Perform other duties deemed necessary and appropriate per federal, state, and local guidelines and students’ I.E.P.s.
Work a full duty day in the assigned location(s).
Maintain physical and emotional capacity to perform the required work in a fast‑paced, intensive environment.
Maintain a neat and appropriate appearance.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Meet the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and the Kansas State Department of Education.
Hold or be eligible for Kansas certification appropriate for the position.
Show tolerance and understanding of students with special needs.
Display initiative, creativity, self‑motivation, and good judgment.
Demonstrate adaptability, flexibility, and respect for confidentiality.
Have excellent interpersonal, professional judgment, oral, and written communication skills.
Be efficient and organized in paper management.
Communication & Organization
Maintain communication with teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action that meets students’ educational needs. Provide health services, information, and counseling. Complete accident/incident reports, compile data for statistical purposes, and protect confidentiality of educational records.
Maintain a daily log of school/staff visits and documentation, keep the daily environment of the health office facility and supplies organized, and utilize existing technology effectively.
Reasoning Ability & Language Skills
Apply knowledge to solve practical problems, interpret instructions, and present information effectively. Read and analyze professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations; write reports and protocols; and respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the public.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
Required to sit, walk, stand, and talk or hear; occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds and push items up to 50 pounds. Occasionally visit a child’s home. Vision required: close, distance, and depth perception. Work environment is normally loud; employee is directly responsible for students’ safety, work output, and well‑being.
Other Skills and Abilities
Apply research and theory to instructional programs, plan and implement lessons based on objectives and student needs, and establish effective relationships with students, peers, parents, and community. Communicate clearly and concisely in written or oral form.
