The Science Center's workforce includes executive, managerial, supervisory, and administrative classifications, however, rank and file facility maintenance and skilled trades represent approximately fifty-one percent (51%) of its civil service workforce. We are seeking a Custodian Supervisor I to join our day shift team.

The duties of the Custodian Supervisor I include, but are not limited to, coordinating and leading the activities of a crew of 5-7 Custodian I staff, including maintaining and cleaning offices, restrooms, buildings, and other assigned areas, ensuring all assigned areas are clean and orderly throughout State property; and operating a variety of cleaning tools and equipment. The Custodian Supervisor I is the first point of contact for all personnel related tasks, including timekeeping, performance management, health and safety, and training.

Department Information The California Science Center, a prominent state scientific and technological museum, is located South of Downtown Los Angeles at Exposition Park is open to the public seven days a week, 362 days per year, with free general admission to its permanent exhibit galleries. Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

• Professional cleaning experience in a lead or supervisor capacity, including experience assigning, coordinating, monitoring, or reviewing the work of custodial staff.
• Knowledge of custodial practices, methods, materials, supplies, equipment, and techniques, including the safe and effective use of cleaning chemicals, tools, and janitorial equipment.
• Knowledge of workplace safety practices and procedures, applicable to custodial operations, including the proper handling, storage, labeling, and disposal of cleaning chemicals and hazardous materials.
• Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, assign, and monitor custodial work to ensure facilities are maintained in a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly condition, and service standards are met.
• Ability to lead, train, coach, and provide direction to custodial employees, including communicating work expectations, demonstrating proper work methods, providing constructive feedback, and addressing performance or work-quality concerns.
• Ability to use tact, diplomacy, sound judgment, and professionalism when communicating and working with customers, co-workers, management, vendors, and other government agency representatives.
• Experience safely and effectively operating a variety of janitorial and custodial equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), operating and maintenance instructions, product labels, policies, procedure manuals, schedules, and other written materials related to custodial operations.
• Ability to work within demanding time frames, manage competing priorities, and adjust work assignments as operational needs change.
• Ability to maintain a professional, respectful, and services-oriented approach when interacting with employees, customers, co-workers, management, vendors, and other government representatives.
