Maintenance Electrician I- Full time

Position Overview

Correctional Electrician at Corrigan Correctional Institution, Montville, CT. Full‑time, Monday through Friday from 7:45 AM to 3:00 PM. Hazardous duty with a comprehensive pension plan.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain emergency generators and lighting systems.

Service fence alarm, perimeter lighting, fire alarm, and motorized gate systems.

Manage emergency power/UPS equipment and cell door control systems.

Operate and maintain surveillance cameras and related recording infrastructure.

Repair and upgrade high/low voltage distribution and facility wiring.

Maintain equipment in kitchen and laundry areas.

Keep accurate tool inventory records and perform snow and ice removal.

Supervise assigned inmates performing maintenance duties.

Essential Duties

Repair, maintain, and install electrical systems and equipment—including motors, transformers, generators, wiring, switches, fixtures, and circuit breakers.

Diagnose malfunctions using test instruments (amp meter, voltmeter, VOM tester) and replace damaged components.

Provide instruction and training to inmates and maintain their discipline.

Plan, layout, and wire new installations, and instruct inmates in these processes.

Keep detailed maintenance records and complete reports.

Evaluate inmate performance and enforce security protocols.

Perform supplemental duties as needed and, if required, operate a motor vehicle.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong knowledge of electrical repair materials, methods, tools, and equipment.

Understanding of electrical system principles and operations.

Ability to analyze and troubleshoot electrical malfunctions quickly and accurately.

Skill in interpreting and revising electrical wiring diagrams and schematic drawings.

Capability to plan, schedule, and estimate the cost of maintenance assignments.

Proficiency in operating computerized and automated control systems.

Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication abilities.

Ability to maintain records, prepare reports, and instruct others.

Capability to perform under stress and remain composed in high‑pressure situations.

Supervisory competence when overseeing inmate crews.

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Three (3) years of experience as an electrician.

Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience

One (1) year of the general experience must have been at a highly skilled level.

Substitutions Allowed

Graduation from a vocational or technical school in the electrical trade may substitute for one (1) year of the general experience.

Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade on a military base, aircraft carrier, or large compound may substitute for the general and special experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure in commercial buildings.

Installation and repair of control wiring for motors, automation, fire‑alarm, security CCTV, and data networks.

Inspection, testing, and repair of kitchen and laundry electrical appliances.

Experience with standby generators, transfer switches, and UPS systems.

Application of the National Electrical Code.

Familiarity with Building Management Systems and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel).

Valid E‑1 (Unlimited Electrical Contractor) or E‑2 (Unlimited Electrical Journeyperson) license.

Special Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Required to complete formal correctional work training.

Available for after‑hour emergencies as directed.

Must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and be ready to travel if required.

Character & Physical Requirements

Full health assessment, including a controlled‑substance screening, required upon conditional offer.

Physical stamina, agility, and stamina adequate to perform all duties.

Ability to respond to inmate‑related hazards and electrical risks.

Working Conditions

Incumbents may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates and to hazards inherent in electrical work.
