The Workers’ Compensation Unit in the Civil Litigation and Employment Section of the Colorado Attorney General’s Office is currently seeking an experienced Paralegal to join the team! The Workers’ Compensation Unit represents state agencies and institutions of higher education in workers’ compensation matters. The Unit manages litigation from inception through hearings and appeals, including fully contested claims, challenges to specific disability and medical benefits, penalty allegations, petitions to review, and cases with subrogation issues. The Unit provides formal training and day-to-day advice to the state Risk Management’s Workers’ Compensation Division, state agencies, and the State’s third party-claims administrator, regarding workers’ compensation law, liability exposure, and settlements.

This position assists and supports the attorneys defending workers’ compensation claims by opening claims, gathering information, investigating claims, determining appropriate action on new claims; drafting motions, pleadings and discovery under an attorney’s supervision; filing pleadings with the Division of Workers’ Compensation, Office of Administrative Courts or other courts as necessary; organizing documents and assistance with preparing and coordinating witnesses and exhibits for hearings, and other trial preparation as necessary. This position will lead the Unit to stay current on applicable procedural rules, case law and will collect and assemble data for use in reviewing the unit’s effectiveness and for determining areas for possible change or improvement and other assignments as needed.

Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. This posting is only open to residents of the State of Colorado at the time of submitting your application.

Paralegal certificate obtained through either an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal studies program or an accredited institution.

One (1) year of paralegal experience.

Two (2) years of work experience in a paralegal capacity which included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources will substitute for the required certificate.

A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school may substitute for the required certificate.

Recent work experience beyond one year of supporting attorneys in the workers’ compensation area.

Experience ordering, organizing and maintaining medical records electronically.

Experience organizing and managing multiple projects simultaneously including managing multiple hard deadlines.

This position offers flexible work arrangements. New employees are expected to work in-office. Additional flexibility will be considered for employees after a successful onboarding and training period. Please note, flexible work arrangements may change at any time based on business needs.
