Responsibilities Under general supervision and medical direction, the respiratory therapist performs respiratory care related procedures, exercises considerable judgment in accordance with the physician's treatment plan and within the scope of departmental policies and procedures. The scope of practice includes patient/family assessment and management, resource management, care facilitation, and discharge planning as required. The respiratory therapist assesses the resident's condition, administers prescribed therapy, and aerosolized medications, observes and records the resident's progress and response to therapy modalities, and monitors for adverse reactions to drugs and therapy. The respiratory therapist provides in‑service training to residents, family members, and facility staff. The resident population is primarily adult and geriatric. The respiratory therapist utilizes knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the resident's age to ensure that care provided meets the unique physical and psychological needs of the resident. The respiratory therapist involves appropriate parties (i.e. family or facility staff) in the assessment, treatment, and continuing care of the resident as needed. The respiratory therapist initiates, monitors and maintains life support systems for residents in a skilled nursing facility, performs airway care and maintenance, manages artificial ventilator status as directed by an approved protocol, maintains and troubleshoots mechanical ventilators, participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures of bag ventilation and closed chest massage, initiates, monitors and documents performance of various respiratory care modalities, performs assessment of residents' cardiopulmonary status utilizing physical assessment and history‑taking skills, laboratory findings, and radiological studies, formulates a respiratory care plan upon the order of a physician, performs various tasks before treating a resident such as checking physician's orders for completeness, verifying diagnosis and ICD-10 code, type and duration of therapy, medication dosage, FiO2 and frequency, reviewing the resident's chart for history and precautions, observing and charting vital signs and respiratory status, notifying supervisor, administering proper technical respiratory care procedures, dispensing medication, adjusting devices, observing respiratory rate and pattern, ensuring proper charting, inspecting and testing equipment, disassembling, cleaning and reassembling as required, maintaining supply, performing administrative duties and record‑keeping, disposing of equipment, assisting in emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation, being CPR certified, initiating, administering, evaluating response to and documenting all therapy modalities, including intermittent positive pressure breathing, hand‑held nebulizer, chest physical therapy modalities such as percussion, vibration, breathing and cough retraining exercises, deep tracheal suctioning, incentive spirometry, sputum induction, recognizing adverse reactions, documenting all care services, transcribing verbal orders, maintaining log entries on oxygen and respiratory supplies, instructing residents and family members on procedures, working toward set goals, attending educational programs, reading professional journals, participating in interdisciplinary resident rounds and conferences, contributing to quality assurance program data collection, ensuring effective delivery of rehab services, adhering to established plans of care, maintaining equipment troubleshooting, and performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications High level of knowledge of respiratory therapy and practice required through completion of a NBRC approved and accredited program and one year of clinical practice experience under medical direction

Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification

Current state licensure for a Respiratory Care Practitioner

Posted salary range: USD $30.00 - USD $33.00 per hour
