Phlebotomist IIThe Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling of specimens, troubleshooting routine issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements. This role requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, attention to detail, and the ability to provide clear, courteous service to patients and clinical staff in a fast-paced environment.ResponsibilitiesPerform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high degree of accuracy and care.Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and infection control guidelines.Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support safe and efficient laboratory operations.Update patient information and ensure that records are accurate and current within the laboratory information systems.Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries, following applicable policies.Assist in troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality in specimen collection and processing.Support training activities by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures when requested.Essential SkillsValid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states.Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.High school diploma or GED.Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draw and specimen collection techniques.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation, and communication.Ability to interpret and fully understand physicians' orders related to laboratory testing.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience providing customer service in a healthcare or laboratory setting.Familiarity with laboratory information systems and electronic health records.Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety practices.Ability to participate in and benefit from ongoing training and professional development.Work EnvironmentThis role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment that requires strict adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory standards. The position involves frequent interaction with patients and clinical staff, regular handling of biological specimens, and use of standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, and centrifuges. Work typically includes standing for extended periods, moving between patient areas and laboratory spaces, and working with computers and Microsoft Office applications for documentation and communication. Annual department trainings and ongoing updates to procedures support a culture of continuous improvement, accuracy, and patient-centered care.
