OR RN Job Description
The OR RN is responsible for the care of the patients in the operating room. The nurse is accountable for ongoing evaluation, provision of care, and documentation of all components of care delivered to customers within the perioperative environment utilizing the nursing process. The RN coordinates care with the team assigned to care for each patient, and communicates concerns to the OR, preoperative, and postoperative staff in a professional manner to ensure patient safety.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Upon arrival, work with the team to damp dust the assigned OR suite, including all equipment and all flat surfaces, to prepare it for use.
• Organizes and prepares for the care of the patients assigned to the team each day, gathering necessary equipment and supplies according to the surgeon's preference cards.
• Ensures that the surgical room is sterile and safe for the patient.
• Works side by side with surgical technologists to help maintain the sterile field in the operating room. Ensures the sterile field is not compromised during the procedure, and takes appropriate action to maintain sterility or correct a break in sterile technique.
• Interviews and assesses the patient in the preoperative area, checking that all pertinent documentation is present, and that the patient has had appropriate site marking completed with the surgeon according to hospital policy.
• Communicates with the CRNA when they are ready to send for the patient, including the patient's name they should be sending for.
• Assists anesthesia provider as needed for induction, throughout the procedure, and during emergence.
• Works with a physician to develop the care plan for the patient during the surgery.
• Ensures proper positioning of the patient and maintains patient safety during the procedure.
• Preps the patient's surgical site according to surgeon preference and according to policy.
• Knows and adheres to the policies of the Dunes Surgical Hospital and demonstrates fiscal responsibility.
• Keeps the surgical room clean and organized for the team; keeps instruments and sponges removed from the field organized and visible for counting.
• Documents the care of the patient in the operating room thoroughly and accurately. Ensures charges are accurate, implants and tissue tracking information is complete, and the documentation is completed in a timely manner.
• Maintains accurate counts according to hospital policy.
• Communicates with the OR board runner any concerns regarding patient care, schedule changes, or other issues in a timely, professional manner.
• Ensures that the verbal debriefing is completed at the end of the procedure, before the surgeon leaves the OR suite, and that end of procedure documentation is complete and accurate.
• Calls family care coordinator with updates during long procedures, and to bring family to the consult room after the verbal debriefing has occurred.
• Coordinates with the surgical aides to ensure recovery carts or postop beds are obtained, and that the patient is put on the appropriate one for their length of stay before they leave the operating room.
• Work with the team to restock supplies, put all equipment and supplies away, and terminally clean the room at the end of their shift or when a room closes.
• Help with turnover, lifting, and breaks during downtimes between cases. Check in with the board runner when the room is completed for further assignment.
• Actively participates in appropriate committees as assigned.
• Follows OSHA and other standards for protection against blood-borne pathogens.
• Helps to care for and maintain equipment according to IFUs.
• Informs management of applicable day-to-day situations, and enters Midas Edge reports when incidents occur.

Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, Qualifications and Education and/or Experience Requirements:

1. Must be a graduate of accredited college or university.
2. Registered Professional Nurse with current state licensure.
3. BLS Certification Required.
4. Excellent communication skills.
5. Must pass the AORN Perioperative 101 course during our Mentorship Program if no prior experience. OR experience is preferred but not required.

Physical Demands:

1. Will be required to lift patients frequently, requiring the ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
2. Must be able to exert at least 50 pounds of force to assist with patient transports.
3. Be able to stand, bend, stoop, and/or sit within a confined area for prolonged periods.
4. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
5. Dexterity: Frequent repetitive motion of hands/wrist involved.
6. Will be working in a clean, well-lighted area.
7. May be required to deal with unpleasant environmental situations resulting from patient care or activity.
