Volunteer Firefighter

About the Position This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

Who May Apply US Citizens. In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience One year of specialized experience which includes:

Performing firefighting work that involves the use of firefighting and fire prevention techniques and methods such as performing search and rescue, operating hose lines and performing ventilation.

Scheduling and/or conducting inspections, tests, and preventive maintenance service on fire apparatus or firefighting equipment.

Assisting in a fire prevention program, emergency medical technician program, or hazardous material response program.

Selective Placement Factors This position requires you to possess and maintain all of the following Department of Defense, International Fire Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) equivalent certifications. Fire Officer III

Fire Inspector II

Fire Instructor II

Hazardous Materials Incident Command

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification at the Basic or higher level issued by the State of Illinois or National Registry. A copy of your certification must be submitted.

Maximum Entry Age (MEA) The MEA for Firefighters is 37. An employee originally hired into a covered position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37.

Maximum Reentry Age An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57 if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
