Job Summary The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and helps with patient follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan, which may include activities such as administering medication with careful dosage checks and avoidance of interactions, starting, maintaining, and discontinuing intravenous (IV) lines for fluid, medication, blood, and blood products, administering therapies and treatments, observing the patient and recording those observations, and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians.
The RN teaches patients and their families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post‑treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and therapy. The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care and delegates when appropriate. The RN supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precepts new hire staff and students, assists staff and students in completing competency tasks, and continues to enhance knowledge in nursing management and patient care as required.
Essential Functions Collect health data systematically and prioritize based on the patient’s condition or needs, involving the family.
Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and use the nursing diagnosis to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an appropriate, family‑centered, developmentally and culturally relevant plan of care.
Identify individualized expected outcomes for the patient’s specific health problems.
Develop and implement evidence‑based, continuous, patient‑centered plans of care.
Initiate treatments, medications, emergency, and resuscitative measures based on standing orders, policies, and procedures.
Provide nursing care that meets the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs of the patient and family.
Evaluate patient progress toward attainment of outcomes and document observations, interventions, therapeutic measures, and monitoring data in a retrievable form.
Continuously evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the care plan to maintain cost‑effective, high‑quality care.
Evaluate one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional standards and laws, and maintain current knowledge in nursing practice.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care delivery.
Collaborate with the patient, family, and other healthcare providers to provide patient care and develop evidence‑based standards of care.
Identify and implement practice changes using evidence‑based approaches and facilitate the adoption and adaptation of change.
Participate in evidence‑based research to identify strategies for improving nursing practice and patient outcomes, and apply systematic evaluation of clinical, educational, and managerial data.
Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care, utilizing resources efficiently and effectively.
Education Required: Associate’s degree or Diploma in Nursing (or equivalent certificate).
For Diploma and ADN hires: Complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5 or more years of RN experience (direct or indirect) at hire.
Required: Baccalaureate in Nursing (BSN). For staff with direct responsibility for stroke patients, refer to the stroke‑specific education addendum (prior to start).
Experience Other: More than 10 months in a med‑surg or acute specialty setting.
Required: At least 1 year of RN experience for all float positions.
Licensing & Certifications Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required (Class C). Unit‑specific certification as required by specialty area also required.
Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Arizona (or Compact State license).
National certification for unit‑specific patient population required upon hire.
