Health Insurance Counselor

Register/admit patients in the hospital system. Obtain signatures for required documents and scan into electronic record. Verify insurance benefits for admissions and initiate authorization/precertification as required for both admissions and OP registrations. Identify any co-pays or deductibles and initiate up-front collections process. Register/admit patient by obtaining accurate demographic and insurance information.
Have appropriate forms signed and scan into electronic medical record (HPF/HBF).
Place ID band on all patients after confirming hospital identifiers: patient name and date of birth.
Direct patient to appropriate department/nursing unit or arrange transport as required.
Medicare CWF, Medicaid web sites, Recondo, private payer web sites and/or VRU, etc.
Initiate up -front cash collections for both Inpatient and Outpatient accounts.
Assist self-paying patients by identifying programs they may qualify for including Medical Assistance, Medicare disability, Crime Victims, etc.
Refer to hospital financial counselors as needed.
Initiate precertification for admissions by entering information into the Insurance carrier web site or notifying them via telephone.
For outpatients, verify precertification has been completed by checking AS400 or Tempus.
Contact UM precept nurse or insurance company directly when needed.
High school diploma or GED.
Basic general office skills.
Computer experience including data entry, internet use.
Medical terminology and prior insurance experience.
