Hospital Experience Highly Preferred

At Houston Methodist, the Staff Pharmacist position is responsible for providing day‑to‑day comprehensive, patient‑oriented pharmacy services in any or all areas of the department. This includes processing orders, therapeutic review, and education to patients and other members of the direct patient‑care team. The role collaborates with other health‑care professionals to manage patients’ drug therapies for effectiveness and overall safety and contributes to the fulfillment of the department’s mission by providing innovative, personalized, cost‑effective pharmaceutical care in a culture dedicated to quality and safety. The Staff Pharmacist also oversees pharmacy technicians and students, may serve as a preceptor, and ensures the accurate and timely delivery of pharmaceuticals.

Qualifications
Education
Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section.

Experience
No experience required; some experience in the specific setting (e.g., hospital, specialty pharmacy) highly preferred.

Licenses and Certifications
Required

PHRM - Pharmacist State Licensure. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation - PVS Texas Pharmacist license or eligibility for license.

PPC - Pharmacist Preceptor Cert. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation - PVS within 15 months.

IV Certification - Various issuers.

BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (American Heart Association).

Preferred

ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (American Heart Association).

Skills and Abilities

Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, assessed through ongoing evaluations.

Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary for essential functions.

Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers, emphasizing customer‑service focus.

Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills; capable of coordinating activities of a major pharmacy service area.

Knowledge of comprehensive pharmacy services including unit‑dose drug distribution, intravenous admixture preparation, nutrition support services, and target drug monitoring.

Familiarity with rational drug therapy principles and application across all patient groups.

Computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office and EMR software.

Guides and mentors pharmacy technicians and students; when senior staff are absent, coordinates the shift and manages supporting staff.

Service Essential Functions

Processes all orders/requests accurately, verifying drug appropriateness relative to diagnosis, allergies, and patient metrics.

Monitors workload fluctuations and manages pharmacy technician output to ensure timely medication delivery.

Conducts proactive drug‑therapy reviews and monitoring, provides drug information, patient counseling, and manages pharmacist‑based dosing protocols.

Quality/Safety Essential Functions

Collaborates with healthcare professionals to manage drug therapy for effectiveness, side effects, adverse reactions, toxicities, interactions, and incompatibilities.

Documents patient‑care activities and outcomes related to pharmaceutical care and clinical interventions.

Participates in department quality management activities, including medication‑use evaluations, adverse‑drug‑reaction reporting, medication‑center reviews, and inventory documentation.

Finance Essential Functions

Manages inventory to minimize waste and expired drugs in the work area; uses resources effectively and efficiently.

Prioritizes daily tasks and manages time independently.

Growth/Innovation Essential Functions

Participates in inter‑ and intra‑departmental activities, including in‑services, article publication/presentation, preceptorship, and additional training.

Seeks opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies.
