An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMS) within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health system plays a critical role in the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and management of diseases, injuries, and defects of the oral and maxillofacial region. Patient Care and Surgical Procedures
Perform surgical procedures such as:
Surgical management of maxillofacial trauma (fractures, lacerations)
Treatment of oral pathology (tumors, cysts)
Pre-prosthetic surgery for dental rehabilitation
~ Manage patients with complex medical histories and provide consultative services.

Work closely with other medical and dental professionals (ENT, oncology, prosthodontics, anesthesiology, etc.) to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to veteran patients.
Administrative Tasks
Document patient encounters clearly and accurately in the VA's electronic health record (EHR).
Participate in departmental meetings, credentialing, and quality assurance activities.
Contribute to compliance with VA policies and regulatory requirements.
Education and Training
Provide education and supervision to dental residents, medical students, and other healthcare staff if affiliated with an educational program.
Participate in continuing medical/dental education to maintain surgical competencies.
Veteran-Centric Care
Address the unique needs of veterans, including complex medical comorbidities, PTSD, or trauma history.
Advocate for veteran patient care and access to oral and maxillofacial surgical services.
Emergency and On-Call Coverage
Respond to emergent cases involving severe infection or other urgent conditions.
