Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs a wide range of clinical laboratory tests and procedures to assist physicians in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This role requires accuracy, strong analytical skills, and adherence to laboratory protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Perform routine and complex laboratory tests in assigned departments such as Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Urinalysis, and Immunology.

Analyze specimens (blood, urine, body fluids, tissues) and ensure accurate test results.

Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and analyzers.

Perform quality control, calibration, and validation procedures per lab policy.

Review, verify, and document test results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).

Follow CLIA, CAP, OSHA, HIPAA, and facility-specific policies and procedures.

Recognize abnormal results and notify appropriate clinical staff when critical values are identified.

Collect and process specimens as needed, ensuring proper labeling and handling.

Participate in competency assessments, proficiency testing, and continuing education.

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.

Required Qualifications

Associate or Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field.

National certification required or eligible:

ASCP (MLS or MLT), AMT, or equivalent.

Experience in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting (1-2 years preferred, but new grads may be considered).

Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures, quality control, and safety standards.

Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS).

Experience with automated laboratory analyzers and LIS systems.

Prior experience in an acute care hospital environment.

Travel or contract experience (if applicable).

Licensure / Certification - Michigan

Michigan does not require state licensure for Medical Laboratory Technologists.

National certification (ASCP, AMT, etc.) is typically required by facilities.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for extended periods.

Manual dexterity to handle specimens and laboratory equipment.

Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Visual acuity for microscopic analysis and data interpretation.

Additional Information (Optional)

Weekend and holiday rotation may be required.

On-call responsibilities may apply depending on department needs.
