Laboratory Scientist/Cert - Clinical Micro Lab

Department: Laboratory Services (H3200)

Location: Lexington, KY

Grade Level: 11

Salary Range: $26.00-45.70/hour

Position Type: Staff, Full‑Time, 40 hours/week (Monday‑Friday with rotating weekends; shift may vary)

Required Education: BS (Bachelor of Science).

Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science.

Required License/Registration/Certification: ASCP Certification.

Physical Requirements: Regular computer use, repetitive motion, occasional standing or walking with objects up to 10 pounds, occasional exposure to cuts/punctures and burns, regular exposure to bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

Job Summary

The Laboratory Scientist will primarily process and work up blood cultures and other cultures on various shifts, providing services to the Level I trauma center, solid organ and bone marrow transplant units, KY Children’s Hospital, and Markey Cancer Center. Responsibilities include specimen processing, specimen triage, order processing, rapid and stat testing, gram staining and reporting of positive blood cultures, performing multiplex and routine molecular assays, media quality control, monitoring and stocking supplies, and reporting routine cultures.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and problem‑solving skills.

Good keyboarding skills.

Ability to multi‑task and work as part of a team.

Preferred Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science.

ASCP Certification.
