Maintenance Custodian Weekend Evenings

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Shared-Facilities Director and/or designee, the Custodian is responsible for ensuring that the interior and exterior of municipal facilities are maintained in a proper manner as to cleanliness, safety and appearance. It is the responsibility of the Custodian to maintain the municipal facilities and grounds with a high degree of personal pride and interest so that it has an excellent appearance. This position interfaces with the general public and employees on a daily basis and requires a commitment to the highest quality of customer service. The Custodian must successfully pass a background investigation and maintain confidentiality regarding all municipal matters at all times. This position is scheduled for 40 hours per week (8 hours per day). While the regular schedule will be established in advance, flexibility on daily hours is required to accommodate evening and weekend events, as well as emergency response and facility coverage needs at any Town-owned building.
I ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following, other duties may be assigned:
1. Responsible for the overall maintenance and cleanliness of the municipal facilities and outside grounds, including but not limited to:
a. interior spaces, such as hallways, stairs, office space floors, ceilings, woodwork, fans, glass, light fixtures, walls:
i. sweeping, mopping, cleaning and vacuuming all floors and rugs on a daily basis;
ii. buffing and waxing floors based on the facility maintenance schedule;
iii. shampooing carpets based on the facility maintenance schedule;
iv. cleaning and sanitizing the restrooms and restocking the dispensers on a daily basis;
v. dusting and cleaning all counters and desks;
vi. emptying and cleaning all trash and recycling containers on a daily basis;
vii. check all lights on a daily basis and replace bulbs when necessary;
b. all windows, cleaning interior and exterior surfaces and blinds, based on facility maintenance schedule;
c. outside grounds surrounding municipal facilities: sweeping or removing debris from exterior steps and entrances, removing snow and pre-treating for ice on exterior steps and entrances, removing litter from the grounds; raise and lower facility flags as directed by the Director of Shared-Facilities or designee.

1. Adhere to an annual facility maintenance schedule as directed by the Director of Shared-Facilities or designee.
2. Set up and break down of chairs, tables and other furniture/equipment for meetings and other functions scheduled in municipal facilities.
3. Track inventory, order and store cleaning and paper supplies properly in accordance with all applicable codes and standards. Lifts and stores all supplies delivered to Town Hall and town departments and moves necessary items to storage.
4. Notify the Director of Shared-Facilities promptly whenever a problem or an emergency arises in the connection with the operation and maintenance of municipal facilities.
5. Maintain confidentiality regarding all municipal matters at all times.
6. Maintain a professional, friendly and safe working environment.
7. Cover or assist with the custodial duties at other municipal facilities based on scheduling and demands of the workload, at the direction of the Director of Shared-Facilities.
8. Perform other duties as assigned, which include but are not limited to special projects, minor building maintenance or repairs, delivery and pick-up of items or periodic errands as required by the Director of Shared-Facilities or his designee.

II NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
2. Skills in the operation of equipment and tools used in everyday maintenance and cleaning.
3. Ability to perform detail-oriented tasks and able to balance a variety of responsibilities.
4. Ability to show initiative and accept responsibility.
5. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and work with minimal supervision.
6. Ability to effectively interact with the general public, legal and business organizations, Town Officials, and other staff members.

II MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must have a high school diploma or GED certificate.
2. Must be able to handle machinery and tools.
3. Must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
4. Must have knowledge of OSHA standards and general safety standards required for building maintenance.
5. Must have prior computer experience.
6. Must have knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
7. Must have a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
8. Must successfully pass a background investigation.

1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to sit, stand, walk, talk, or hear, use their hands to finger, handle or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms; is occasionally required to climb, balance stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
2. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
3. While performing the duties of this position, the employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to fifty pounds.
4. May be required to work inside and outside of the building in all types of weather.
5. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

V EQUIPMENT USED:

A variety of cleaning and power tools including but not limited to, mops, brooms, vacuum, floor buffer, leaf blower, hand truck, gloves, protective eyewear, step ladder, ladder, paint brushes, trimmer, scrapers, hammers, nails, screwdrivers and wrenches.
Pay Range: $23.05 per hour
