Staff Biologist (On-Call - 40 Hours/Week Guaranteed)

Position Overview
Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Biologist to support environmental surveys, monitoring, and compliance efforts for a variety of infrastructure and environmental projects. This role will support high-voltage transmission line routing, power generation construction activities, water treatment facilities, and other environmental projects.

As part of the Environmental Services Practice, the Staff Biologist will collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to support environmental permitting, impact assessments, and due diligence efforts on both private and federal lands. This position requires strong field experience, avian identification expertise, and environmental compliance knowledge.

This is an on-call position with a guaranteed 40 hours per week .

Key Responsibilities

Conduct routine compliance oversight and monitoring during active construction to ensure adherence to environmental permit conditions

Perform specialized avian surveys to identify species and determine nest status, including raptors and protected species

Conduct habitat assessments and sensitive, threatened, and endangered species surveys

Perform vegetation mapping and general biological fieldwork

Collect, analyze, and manage field data using GPS and GIS technologies

Author technical reports supporting environmental permitting and regulatory requirements

Support environmental permitting, impact assessments, and due diligence efforts

Assist project managers with regulatory strategy and client communications

Travel to project sites as required (approximately 30%)

Ensure compliance with company safety standards and environmental regulations

Support construction monitoring and restoration activities

Perform additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, or related field ( Completed )

Minimum of 4 years of professional experience conducting biological fieldwork and environmental permitting

Experience identifying avian species of the Western U.S. and conducting nest status surveys

Experience performing environmental compliance monitoring for construction projects

Knowledge of key environmental regulations, including:

National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)

Migratory Bird Treaty Act

Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act

Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company vehicle driving requirements

Ability to travel approximately 30%

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Biology, Ecology, or related field ( Completed ) — may substitute for one year of experience

Experience conducting species-specific surveys for:

Burrowing owls

Mexican spotted owls

Raptors and protected avian species

Project experience in:

Arizona

Utah

Professional certifications from federal or state agencies

Proficiency with GIS data collection and management tools such as:
