Under general supervision, patrols an assigned area, enforces public safety laws, codes, and regulations, maintains order, prevents, detects and investigates crime, and carries out special assignments in the protection of life and property; Ability to work extended hours in order to meet shift needs, complete reports, attend meetings, or conduct police business.

Valid Class C California driver license, acceptable driving record, and evidence of insurance are required.
Testing Process : Includes an oral interview, polygraph, background investigation, psychological examination, and a medical examination including a drug/alcohol screening.
Work is performed both inside and outside in seasonal climate and weather conditions. Must constantly work with noise from traffic and police radio. Position requires availability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, on-call and overtime. distinguish colors and observe and recognize people, vehicles and environmental conditions during the day and night; The selection process may include but is not limited to a oral interview, polygraph examination, background check, medical examination and a psychological evaluation.

New Lateral Police Officers hired by the City on or after July 1, 2017, are eligible for a signing bonus of $10,000, paid in two installments. Applications will be screened and those applicants deemed best qualified will be invited to participate in a written exam and/or an oral interview. The final candidate must be able to successfully pass a Police Department pre-employment screening process and successfully complete a background including medical exam, drug screening, employment history verification, DMV check and will also be fingerprinted.

MEDICAL INSURANCE:

Several CalPERS health plans are available. The City pays a flat rate portion of the premium according to the bargaining unit agreement.

DENTAL INSURANCE:

The City pays a flat rate portion of the premium according to the bargaining unit agreement.

The City pays a flat rate portion of the premium. The Employee may pay a portion of the insurance premium according to the bargaining unit agreement and this benefit is mandatory.

LIFE INSURANCE:

Amount of coverage is based on the employee bargaining unit. The City pays a flat rate portion of the premium according to the bargaining unit agreement.

RETIREMENT:

Public Safety (Sworn) employees hired after January 1, 2013 and who are new to CalPERS, or are returning CalPERS members with a break in service greater than six months, will be enrolled in the 2.7% @ 57 retirement plan formula and will be required to pay 50% of the normal CalPERS cost. Public Safety (Sworn) employees hired after January 1, 2013 who are deemed to be existing CalPERS members, will be enrolled in the 2% @ 50 CalPERS benefit formula.

RETIREMENT HEALTH SAVINGS (RHS):

Employee contributes 2% - 3% of their salary based on their years of service to a Retirement Health Savings (RHS) account. The City offers MissionSquare Retirement (formerly ICMA-RC) as its deferred compensation administrator. PERSONAL DAY: Employees recieve one personal day off each year.

HOLIDAYS:
