Material Handler - Full-time Temporary

LoaderThe Loader works in an industrial metal fabrication yard, safely moving heavy steel beams and related products with forklifts and other material handling equipment, and loading and unloading them onto trucks. This role requires proven experience operating lift trucks without supervision, strong knowledge of steel materials and paperwork processes, and the ability to accurately handle inventory while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work area.ResponsibilitiesOperate forklifts and other material handling equipment to move heavy steel beams, pipe, tube, structural steel, and component parts in the yard and loading areas.Load and unload trucks safely, efficiently, and correctly, ensuring all shipments are properly stacked, secured, and prepared for transport.Work independently on lift trucks, demonstrating proven ability to operate equipment without direct supervision.Maintain extensive knowledge of material types, including structural shapes, sizes, grades, weights, and bills of material, and apply this knowledge to daily loading and inventory tasks.Manage paperwork flow for shipping and receiving, including receiving paperwork, mill test reports (MTRs), and other shipping documents.Stage material correctly in and out of the building, following established procedures for placement, organization, and accessibility.Accurately and efficiently perform inventory counts for component parts, finished goods, and raw materials, and update records as required.Maintain the yard and storage areas for component parts, finished goods, and raw materials in an organized and orderly manner.Maintain receiving paperwork and support the return-to-vendor process by documenting and organizing materials being returned.Pull and properly put away component parts and finished goods according to work orders and inventory requirements.Accurately complete all shipping and receiving documentation, ensuring information is correct and submitted in a timely manner.Participate in company-sponsored training classes specific to the equipment operated and successfully pass required training and certifications.Handle and stack material in a safe manner, using appropriate cranes, slings, clamps, and lifting devices while staying within capacity limits.Demonstrate familiarity with crane and sling capacities and use all lifting devices properly to prevent damage and ensure safety.Care for company tools and equipment assigned, keeping them in good working condition and reporting any issues promptly.Maintain an acceptable standard of efficiency and accuracy in all loading, unloading, and inventory tasks.Cooperate with team members and supervisors to meet production and shipping schedules and support a positive work environment.Abide by all safety rules, regulations, and company policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safe work practices.Work in an outdoor yard environment, handling materials ranging from small components up to 40-foot steel beams.Essential SkillsProven experience running forklifts, including handling non-palletized loads in a yard or industrial shop environment.Basic knowledge of rigging practices, including safe use of slings, clamps, and other lifting devices and awareness of crane and sling capacity limits.Extensive knowledge of steel materials, including pipe, tube, structural steel, component parts, structural shapes, sizes, grades, and weights.Strong understanding of paperwork flow for shipping and receiving, including receiving paperwork, mill test reports (MTRs), and shipping documents.Ability to accurately stage material in and out of the building and organize yard and storage areas.Skill in performing precise inventory counts for component parts, finished goods, and raw materials.Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety in all material handling and loading activities.Ability to work in various weather conditions in an outdoor yard setting.Willingness to take and pass company-sponsored training classes specific to the equipment operated.Willingness to join Local 516 Union upon 180 days of employment.Familiarity with industrial metal bending and fabrication shop operations.Experience with sit-down forklifts and other material handling equipment such as boom lifts and telehandlers.Comfort working with materials ranging from small components to large steel beams up to approximately 40 feet in length.Strong organizational skills and knowledge of proper inventory methods.Ability to maintain accurate documentation and follow established processes for shipping, receiving, and returns.Employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package upon conversion to full-time direct hire, including a full-coverage insurance package for medical, dental, vision, and prescription with employer-paid monthly premiums up to a set cap. The position follows a day shift schedule, typically five 8-hour days Monday through Friday, with standard hours of 5:30 a.m. Material handled ranges from small steel components to large beams up to approximately 40 feet in length. Employees use a variety of material handling equipment, including Type 4/5 forklifts, and, after full training, Type 7 forklifts and Gehl Dynalift telehandler forklifts.
