Schedule
Hours of operation for ECHO are variable. Must be available from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with flexibility for extended hours when needed. On call, which includes weekends and holidays, starts at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and ends at 7:00 a.m. on Monday. Must be present/on‑site within 1 hour of call. Travel: 1‑2 times a month, rotational - occasionally we travel with a portable ultrasound machine to a continuing care facility across town to perform echoes.

Registry and Education

Multi‑credentialed sonographers must have one of the following credentials: RCS (Registered Cardiac Sonographer) via CCI, RDCS (Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer) via ARDMS, RVT, or RVS.

Graduate of an accredited technical or associate’s degree program in radiology, with two years of professional experience in intermediate level echocardiography or vascular skills.

Desired Skills

Proficient in transthoracic echocardiography.

Teach and share knowledge base with fellows, team members, and students during clinical rotations.

Familiarity with Philips iE33/EPIQ systems.

Job Summary
The Cardiac Sonographer 2 performs basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound services and procedures for adult patients, such as transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography, to diagnose and assess cardiac abnormalities. General duties include preparing equipment, prepping patients, explaining procedures, reviewing images, reporting findings, analyzing patient clinical history to identify examination purpose, framing clinical questions, and expanding examinations as necessary.

Essential Functions

Prepare patients for procedures and obtain clinical history, including cardiac physical findings and pertinent laboratory data, to adapt imaging techniques for comprehensive diagnostic echocardiograms.

Perform basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures, utilizing various equipment and techniques, and make necessary measurements for accurate, high‑quality results.

Identify and define cardiac abnormalities, extending the scope of examination appropriately, deviating from standard techniques when necessary, and correlating invasive and non‑invasive cardiac diagnostic tests with cardiac anatomy and function.

Assist physicians in procedure rooms and operating rooms by performing echocardiographic studies to aid complex procedures and reduce risk factors.

Assist in performing transesophageal studies with cardiologist, calculate appropriate measurements, and sterilize probes.

Record statistics and perform daily maintenance of the echocardiography lab and its equipment, reporting all malfunctions as appropriate.

Act as a resource to other staff, physicians, and students regarding equipment, techniques, procedures, and studies to optimize patient care.

Work closely with the cardiac sonographer quality coordinator to ensure adherence to quality processes and protocols, and assist with ICAEL accreditation activities as delegated.

Implement protocols as new technology evolves and ensure implementation and adherence to system echocardiography standards.

Key Success Factors

Knowledge and ability to apply complex sonographic principles, instrumentation, and techniques.

Knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology.

Ability to explain the purpose of the echocardiographic examination to the patient and answer patient questions.

Knowledge of approved clinical protocols for each type of cardiovascular ultrasound examination.

Knowledge of appropriate infection control, including precautionary procedures, and relevant laws regarding patient confidentiality and privacy.

Ability to interact and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with healthcare providers, including other sonographers, physicians, and nurses.

Knowledge of medical terminology.

Skilled utilization of computers and medical equipment.

Qualifications

Education - Graduate of an accredited program or two years of work experience above the minimum qualification.

Experience - Less than 1 year of experience.

Certification / License / Registration -

Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.

Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS): Must have one of the following at time of hire/transfer:

RCS through Cardio Credentialing International (CCI).

RDCS through American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
