General Description

Under general supervision, the crisis nurse manager provides professional psychiatric nursing care to acutely and chronically ill mental health, substance abuse and developmentally disabled consumers within a 24/7/365 crisis unit. The manager performs the full range of psychiatric nursing duties, requires thorough knowledge of behavioral health practices, procedures, laws and regulations, and can work independently.

Responsibilities

Demonstrate the use of appropriate knowledge, skill, and judgment to provide nursing care, including:

Observe assigned consumers daily to identify and document physical and emotional status and patterns, and assist in formulating diagnosis and individualized treatment plans.

Participate in or lead individual or group counseling sessions, family conferences, and recreational therapy sessions.

Accurately take and administer physician or NP orders, administer psychotropic medications, monitor usage, and instruct consumers on medication purpose, dosage, and side effects.

Obtain medical, psychiatric, social, and family histories of new admissions, record vital signs, obtain lab specimens, assist physicians, schedule special tests, develop discharge plans, maintain accurate charts, monitor supplies, and draw blood as needed.

Aid consumers in obtaining proper medical care after release or during hospitalization, identify community agencies, interact with private facilities, courts, and agencies, and testify in court regarding the consumer's condition.

Attend assigned training and continuing education to maintain credentialing and privileging.

Develop working knowledge of applicable organizational policies and procedures and demonstrate compliance, including:

Clinical policies and procedures.

Employee ethics, corporate compliance, and consumer rights.

Assure compliance with PCC’s policy and procedures regarding administrative and clinical record management (1-A-006), including supervision of the record management function and training of personnel.

Assist Nurse Leads with scheduling as needed.

Rotate on call with Nurse Leads.

Maintain regular attendance.

Provide supervision to crisis RN and LPN, including performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, and ongoing supervision.

Ensure all nursing staff are trained and competent in nursing procedures.

Assure compliant implementation of nursing and medical policies and procedures.

Provide medication administration training to appropriate and designated staff.

Complete monthly medication administration audits at GHOH and provide follow‑up.

Work as a management team member along with the Chief Programs Officer.

Lift up to 25 lbs.

Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor.

General Knowledge and Skills Required for Position

Knowledge of: the laws and regulations pertaining to psychiatric nursing; the various methods, techniques, and procedures used in psychiatric nursing; the uses and effects of psychotropic drugs and narcotics; consumer safety practices and facility security; symptoms and behavior patterns of emotionally disturbed and mentally ill consumers; theories, principles, and techniques of group and individual psychotherapy; mental health community resources and services; the principles, practices, and laws of professional nursing; health education; common illnesses, diseases, disabilities, injuries, and nutrition.

Ability to: explain mental health laws and regulations; observe emotional and physical behavior; evaluate and assess the need for mental health services; analyze a situation and adopt a course of action; prepare and maintain medical records and reports accurately and in a timely manner; recognize and respect limits of confidential information; direct and advise other nursing staff; communicate with people of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic origins; speak before groups; exercise independent judgment in medical emergencies; demonstrate tact, diplomacy, patience, and compassion; establish and maintain working relationships; comply with nursing policies, protocols, and program regulations; understand and follow written or oral instructions; work independently.

Preferred and Minimum Position Qualifications

Three years of experience in an acute psychiatric care or consumer community mental health facility.

Additional Job Requirements (Licenses, Certifications, Personal Vehicle, etc.)

Possession of a valid Registered Nurse license issued by the North Carolina State Board of Registered Nursing.

May require working on a locked involuntary crisis unit with consumers who can be dangerous to themselves and others; individuals must be able to restrain consumers in an emergent crisis.
