Electrical Wireperson - 1st Shift

The New Castle Generating Station, situated on a 270-acre site along the Beaver River, has undergone a significant transformation from a coal plant to a natural gas facility in 2016, breathing new life into its operations and contributing to the region's energy landscape. Equipped with three natural gas-fired steam boilers, the plant boasts a total potential MW output of 328. The plant is notable for its utilization of B&W Boilers and Westinghouse Steam Turbine Generators, controlled by an ABB DCS system.

The Electrical Specialist is a key contributor to the seamless operation and maintenance of diverse electrical systems. Responsible for the inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance of motors, generators, and high voltage equipment, the technician ensures the plant's reliability and safety. With a commitment to preventive measures, emergency response, and effective communication, the Electrical Specialist plays a crucial role in optimizing plant performance and fostering a culture of safety and efficiency. Additionally, the Electrical Specialist will provide occasional support as needed to the Niles Peaker CT facility located in Niles, OH.

Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, electrical signal, and communication systems.

Perform journeyman-level electrician tasks, including the installation and repair of electrical wiring, equipment, and controls.

Conduct maintenance of 480V–13.8KV electrical systems, including high-voltage switchyards, ensuring compliance with electrical safety practices.

Perform electrical system isolations per industry standards, ensuring safety and training others in electrical safety programs.

Work in compliance with all safety procedures and environmental permits to avoid accidents.

Conduct routine inspections to proactively identify and address potential electrical issues, minimizing unplanned downtime.

Provide training for assigned employees on equipment operations, maintenance practices, and safety protocols.

Work on an individual level to identify the root causes of equipment failures and forced outages. Collaborate with technicians, operators, and maintenance teams to integrate electrical systems with plant operations.

Document all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections to maintain accurate and up-to-date records.

Complete and submit shift and job reports as required.

Participate in planned outages by providing technical support for electrical system maintenance, repairs, and inspections.

Provide occasional support to the Niles Peaker CT facility in Niles, OH, as needed.

Set up rigging, tackle, blocking, and scaffolding for equipment handling and maintenance tasks.

Install and adjust bearings, shafting, gears, and similar equipment requiring close tolerances. Perform equipment alignments.

Conduct intermediate-level mechanical work within required tolerances, including operating, adjusting, and maintaining machine shop equipment.

Use oxyacetylene cutting, brazing, soldering, and gas or electrical welding, excluding welds that require approval or certification.

Adherence to these safety responsibilities is one of the key factors in the evaluation of each employee’s performance.

The Electrical Specialist reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and may also take direction from the Plant Manager.

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. The work environment may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions. Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, eye protection, air masks or respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing, hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

The Electrical Specialist works a standard Monday to Friday day shift schedule, ensuring consistent plant operation and support during regular business hours. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. This position offers a starting base pay rate of $42.94 per hour.

A high school or trade school diploma or the equivalent plus four years of journeyman electrician experience is desired.

Previous experience as a Journeyman Electrician, or relevant military background, preferably within a power plant or heavy industrial setting, showcasing a robust understanding of electrical systems.

Proficiency in inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and installing a wide array of electrical equipment, including motors, generators, transformers, switches, and control systems.

Hands‑on experience working with voltages ranging from 480V to 13.8KV and familiarity with high voltage switchyard basic electrical systems maintenance, adhering to safety practices.

Proven track record of executing electrical system isolations in accordance with industry standards, coupled with the ability to impart training on electrical safety programs.

Strong personal computer skills to facilitate various tasks, including documentation, communication, and data analysis.
