Registered NurseThe Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care including executing Licensed Independent Provider orders. This includes dispensing and administering medications and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients. The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents. The RN performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. They apply appropriate nursing skills in the area and treatment of inmates/residents. The RN attends sick calls with the physician to see inmates/residents, prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined, and prepares examining rooms and equipment. They operate pill calls, dispense medication, and document as required by applicable policies and procedures. The RN calls the Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders and other emergencies. They examine and assess new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries, referring them to emergency rooms or other appropriate healthcare facilities as required. The RN performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies the Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders. They assist in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and ensure that their needs are addressed. The RN monitors inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate. They provide guidance, supervise, and monitor nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. The RN maintains a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, and outside provider agencies. They utilize established policies and procedures in making decisions but use sound independent judgment. The RN regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent the inappropriate use or duplication of those services. They maintain absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records. The RN assists with the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented. They closely monitor all potential catastrophic illnesses. The RN audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed or required. They comply with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances. The RN observes and records inmate/resident behavior. They inspect the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband and securely store or safely dispose of supplies and equipment. The RN provides health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis as required. They assist in preparing and maintaining various standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records while processing all reports in a timely manner. The RN reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures and legal documents. They review, process, and respond to lawsuits and attend court hearings when necessary. The RN facilitates applicable accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and approved medical services. They prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required by policies and take appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
