Student Mental Health Counselor

Position Overview

Student Counselor – supports the academic and personal development of students at North Carolina Central University, a historically Black university in Durham, NC.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide individual and group counseling for a range of personal, social, educational and vocational concerns.

Offer psychoeducational workshops and presentations tailored to student needs (e.g., study skills, assertiveness training, stress management).

Conduct client assessment to assist in decision‑making and problem‑solving.

Develop and present outreach programs and provide crisis intervention and management, including on‑call rotation.

Provide student advocacy, referrals to community agencies and other university units.

Consult with faculty and staff on student issues.

Fulfill administrative duties, serve on campus committees, and maintain updates during staff meetings.

Supervise and train master’s‑level practicum students and interns in counseling, crisis management and program development.

Engage in professional development to maintain knowledge of college mental health trends.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Advanced counseling skills for individual and group settings.

Knowledge of program development, outreach, consultation, crisis intervention and management.

Strong interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate with students, faculty, staff and community partners.

Understanding of developmental characteristics of late adolescence and young adulthood.

Commitment to multicultural competencies and experience with gender/sexuality issues.

Excellent oral and written communication.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master’s degree required (doctorate preferred) in counseling, psychology, social work or related field with a focus on sport and performance. Completed clinical training in practicum and internship with courses in personality, abnormal psychology, human development, crisis counseling and alcohol and substance use (preferred). Experience working with student‑athletes or performers in high‑performance environments; strong skills in mental health counseling, crisis intervention and mental‑skills training; ability to collaborate across departments and engage in outreach initiatives.

Licenses or Certification

Full (unencumbered) licensure or eligibility for full licensure in North Carolina. Consideration for sport psychology/counseling and performance consultation (CMPC) with clinical experience if not fully licensed.
