Medical Laboratory Scientist II

Silver Spring, MD, Every Other Saturday and Sunday 10:45 PM to 7:15 AM

Department: Generalist for Core Lab Departments

Pay range: $32.00 - $40.35 per hour; shift differential 10% (second shift) and 15% (third shift). Salary offers based on skills, experience, education and certifications. Eligible for annual performance bonus.

Perform test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring independent judgement and responsibility in specialties in which the candidate is qualified by education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

Demonstrate proficiency in all testing areas and troubleshoot applicable instruments/procedures.

Support quality control, complex problem resolution, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement and special projects.

Perform and report assigned analytical tests per SOPs and quality control requirements.

Support laboratory policies for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting and record‑keeping.

Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround time, including critical results.

Ensure reagents/test kits have received, expiration, and opened dates.

Perform and document QC analysis; make quality control decisions about assay or test disposition.

Inform supervisory personnel of all problems associated with test procedures.

Report actual or potential deviations from standard procedures and cooperate in investigations.

Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for physician review.

Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional and sanitary condition.

Complete training and competency checklists as required.

Assist supervisor with training of other personnel.

Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA and laboratory safety requirements.

Use personal protective equipment and other controls as directed.

Answer client and lab personnel questions, if applicable.

Participate in regulatory agency inspections.

Assume lead responsibilities if qualified and delegated in the absence of a supervisor.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Work Experience: One year full‑time experience or training in high‑complexity testing in a clinical laboratory or hospital setting.

Preferred Work Experience: Minimum 3 years clinical lab experience with most recent year in present department; prior hospital experience.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Lifting/carrying: 1–10 lbs frequently; 11–25 lbs occasionally; 36–50 lbs seldom; 50 lbs without assistance.

Stand and work at bench for long periods; frequent walking/standing.

Manual dexterity required for pipettes and instruments.

Knowledge

Comprehensive operational knowledge in designated specialty.

Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.

BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology, or Associate's degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; or previously qualified under 42 CFR 493.1433 (March 14, 1990).

Foreign‑educated candidates must provide credential evaluation from IERF; U.S. educated candidates must provide original transcript.

Other state‑specific requirements may apply; check local HR or QA departments.

Education

Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology (preferred).

Bachelor's Degree BS in Medical Technology, Biology or Chemistry (preferred).

Licenses and Certifications

ASCP Certification (preferred).

MLS, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Med Tech, CLS, Clinical Lab Scientist.
