The Position
The City of Santa Rosa is now hiring motivated and hardworking journeyman electrician to join our team in providing critical services to the local community! The Transportation and Public Works Electrical Section maintains over 16,000 streetlights within the City of Santa Rosa as well as electrical systems in over 100 City buildings. Additionally, the Electricians are responsible for conducting underground service alerts that identify all City owned electrical lines in the public right of way. The Electrician's duties include but are not limited to, performing complex, journey level electrical work to maintain, install or repair City electrical systems; performing preventative maintenance on street lighting systems, motors, and equipment to ensure their safe operation; inspecting newly installed electrical equipment and lighting to ensure safe operation and code compliance; repairing worn or defecting electrical components or parts including, pumps, controllers, fixtures and equipment; and performing digging, trenching, and occasional concrete removal and finishing and installing electrical conduit and conductors.
The successful candidate will have completed a commercial apprenticeship program, possess the ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively on a crew, demonstrate a prideful work ethic, be safety oriented and adhere to all safety regulations, standards, and codes, have an organized, detail-oriented, analytical propensity, be experienced performing work at heights and in emergency/hazardous situations, have experience working with, and around, high voltages. Additionally, possession of an IMSA certification in traffic signal maintenance is highly desirable. Within one (1) year of employment the incumbent must possess and maintain an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I certification in traffic signal maintenance. Possession of, or ability to obtain IMSA Level II certification in traffic signal maintenance is highly desirable. Additionally, possession of (or ability to obtain immediately upon hire) a Class C California motor vehicle operator's license is required. Thirty-six months of recent satisfactory driving history is required, and job offers will be contingent upon meeting the City of Santa Rosa Driving History Standard. Possession of a Class A license will be required prior to completion of the probationary period for positions where the license is required for performance of job duties. The City of Santa Rosa will pay the expenses for the Class A commercial training and Internation Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level 1 certificate in traffic signal maintenance.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties include performing journey level electrical work as required to maintain, install, or repair all City electrical systems; performing skilled electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work involving municipal facilities, buildings, and street lighting systems; performing preventive maintenance on street lighting, electrical systems, motors, and equipment, which includes the safe operation of an aerial bucket truck and large construction equipment; inspecting newly installed electrical equipment and lighting to ensure safe operation as well as code compliance; maintaining accurate records of work performed, materials used, and associated costs; repairing or replacing defective or worn electrical parts, components, and controlling software in electrical systems and devices, electrical motors, generators, pumps, controllers, heating and air conditioners, lighting systems, and other fixtures and equipment; and performing associated work including digging, trenching, occasional concrete finishing and removal, and lifting electrical equipment, conduit, and pipe.
Additional duties may include troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment to determine the nature of the problem; repairing small and large electrical appliances; repairing electronic components of electrical equipment as required for continued operation; making emergency electrical repairs to traffic signals, street lighting, generators, parking garages and pumps, as required; marking out underground electrical facilities as required for construction projects; and performing related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, and procedures used in the installation, maintenance, repair, replacement, and alteration of electrical equipment; components and parts used in modern electrical wiring systems such as pumps, motors, controls, and lighting; basic principles and components found in electronic control and microprocessing devices; occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in electrical work. In addition, a basic understanding of overhead line construction, Public Utilities Commission (PUC) Order #95, National Electric Code and Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards is required. Ability to work independently and make sound decisions regarding work methods and tools; read, interpret, apply, and enforce applicable codes and standards as related to electrical installation; apply State, Federal, and local safety regulations and codes to municipal electrical work; work safely both independently and as a crew member on high voltages up to 600 volts A.C.; work safely near energized PG&E primary and secondary lines with voltages up to 4160 A.C.; provide technical assistance and work direction to other staff members; understand and interpret written and oral instructions; comprehend and make inferences from written material; read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and work orders; prepare and maintain records, reports, and work estimates; and perform work at heights and in emergency and hazardous situations. Experience and education: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience - Sufficient experience as a journey level electrician in a municipal, commercial or industrial environment to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above; Education - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. License/Certificate: In order to drive, individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely and must possess, or have the ability to obtain prior to the completion of the probationary period, and thereafter maintain throughout employment in this classification, a valid California Class A commercial motor vehicle operator's license and a current medical examiner's certificate. Must possess and maintain, within one (1) year of employment, an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I certification in traffic signal maintenance. Possession of, or ability to obtain, IMSA Level II certification in traffic signal maintenance is highly desirable. A current State of California Electrical Journeyman Certificate / License is highly desirable.

Working conditions and physical requirements include using common hand tools such as hammers, saws, and screw drivers; making precise arm-hand positioning movements when working with electrical hand tools, for example, when using a socket wrench on overhead luminaires; climbing ladders or steps to reach objects; making continuous, repetitive arm-hand movements when working with screwdrivers or tightening or loosening lamps and photocells; coordinating movement of more than one limb simultaneously and making fine, highly controlled muscular movements while operating equipment used to set such items as street light poles; bending and stooping repeatedly or continually over time when working in electrical panels or picking up cones; working in a variety of weather conditions with exposure when working on street light system; observing or monitoring such items as electrical meters and truck hydraulic lifts for compliance with safety standards; making skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects when connecting bolts on breakers to live panels or working with fuses; using arms above shoulder level when installing overhead conduit or fixtures; working in small, cramped areas when working in a bucket or with panels that are difficult to access; working while standing on extension ladders or lift trucks at heights greater than 25 feet, such as when servicing or repairing street lights; hearing alarms and other auditory warning devices such as vehicle back-up bells or electrical panel audible alarms; using stomach and lower back muscles to support the body when lifting heavy electrical equipment during installation, or when climbing in and out of the truck cab or bucket; walking over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces to access work sites in City parks; moving electrical components or fixtures weighing up to 50 pounds short distances; discriminating among colors or matching colors of electrical wires; communicating orally both face to face and using a telephone when receiving or communicating status of work assignments; and sitting for extended periods of time with the ability to move about at will when working on ground level electrical facilities.
