Looking for a full-time job that allows you to make a difference in your community? City of Los Altos is currently seeking a facility maintenance worker and streets maintenance worker to join our City team and help maintain our public buildings, facilities, and streets.
Maintenance Worker I: $71,546.18 - $86,964.82 Annually
Maintenance Worker II: $79,500.72 - $96,633.42 Annually
ABOUT THE POSITION Under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker, performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance of recreational & City facilities and public grounds. Operates maintenance and construction equipment; Parks & Recreation - Facilities Division
The Parks & Recreation Facilities Division is looking for a team-oriented individual with a great work ethic to join our team! The Parks & Recreation Department Facilities Division is a hard-working team that provides front-line services to the public maintaining the City's infrastructure. Our department mission is to provide the best possible service to the community of Los Altos in a way that is proactive, responsive and progressive. Performs a variety of routine, heavy, unskilled, semiskilled and skilled maintenance and repair of City's Facilities.
Maintenance Worker I:
This is the entry-level class in the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II (MWII) by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Must be able to perform heavy physical labor.
Maintenance Worker II:
This is the full journey-level class within the Maintenance Worker series. Employees at the MWII level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.
Inspect city owned buildings, park grounds, structures, and related facilities for safety, appearance, and vandalism.

  • Clean and clear structures of debris and hazardous conditions; maintain city facilities; prepare indoor and outdoor facilities for special events.
  • Assist in the maintenance, construction, and repair of city facilities as necessary.
  • Operates trucks.
  • Perform general painting, plumbing, and carpentry work as needed.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in working order.
  • Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Maintenance Worker I

Minimum of one year of experience in construction or maintenance work
Facilities: Building maintenance work involving carpentry, painting, plumbing, and heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) in the repair and maintenance of City buildings, equipment, and facilities is highly desired.
Installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing fixtures/equipment, including toilets, pumps, and faucets is highly desired.
High school diploma or GED equivalent

Maintenance Worker II
Three years of experience in construction or maintenance work.
Facilities: Building maintenance work involving carpentry, painting, plumbing, and heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) in the repair and maintenance of City buildings, equipment, and facilities is highly desired.
Installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing fixtures/equipment, including toilets, pumps, and faucets is highly desired.
High school diploma or GED equivalent

Must possess and maintain a Class B California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record

Uses and purposes of various hand tools employed in basic laboring; safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools and heavy equipment; the operation and maintenance of a variety of light and heavy equipment. Maintenance Worker I
Facilities:
Uses and purposes of various hand tools employed in basic laboring; safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools and heavy equipment.
The operation and maintenance of a variety of light and heavy equipment including trucks, scissor lift, and forklifts.
Methods, practices and materials used in public works construction and maintenance, and safe work practices.
Ability to work on computers; emails and work order entries.
Maintenance Worker II
In addition to the minimum qualifications for Maintenance Worker II:
Facilities:
Commercial plumbing and lighting fixtures and repairs related to facilities.
Ability to gather and provide data for reports.
Ability to read building drawings.
Ability to provide instructions to MWI for facilities-related tasks.

Boilers
Ability to identify needed inventory of maintenance parts and supplies
This recruitment is to fill 1 full-time vacancy within the Parks Department Streets division. Applications will be reviewed and screened every two weeks after posting date. Applications will be screened on a bi-weekly basis after initial posting date. Communicates effectively and proactively both verbally and in writing. Enjoys working in a small-town atmosphere with an engaged public, including merchants, property owners and residents.
While performing maintenance activities, the Maintenance Worker I/II is required to stand; Heavy physical indoor or outdoor work is required during the course of a normal maintenance work day. Work on holidays, weekends, and nights may be required.
