Nova Biomedical is building its next generation of automation capabilities across multiple manufacturing sites and is seeking a hands-on Automation Engineer with strong manufacturing support experience, proven mechanical/electrical troubleshooting ability, and a developing skill set in automation integration. This role will support production operations and lead or assist automation equipment projects across our Massachusetts sites, with focus areas that include improving quality, efficiency, capacity, and ergonomics; sustaining and troubleshooting production equipment; and building the foundation for equipment data integration - SCADA/AVEVA Wonderware, OSIsoft PI Historian, and future MES/EBR enablement - in a regulated environment. The ideal candidate brings experience supporting automation equipment and a strong desire to grow further into controls, integration, and digital manufacturing.

Manufacturing Support & Troubleshooting
Own daily technical support for manufacturing equipment across Waltham, Norwood, and Billerica.
Diagnose and resolve issues across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and basic control systems.
Conduct informal system reviews and drive mechanical/controls improvements.
Automation & Equipment Projects
Lead the design, installation, and qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ) of new automation systems, including:
Robotics/cobots, palletizers, automated dispensing systems
Vision inspection systems

Mechanical upgrades and OEM equipment
Own the creation and execution of URS (User Requirements Specifications) and FRS (Functional Requirements Specifications) for automation projects.
Manage vendor selection, FAT/SAT, and commissioning, ensuring scope, schedule, and quality objectives are met.
Own and execute connections between equipment and supervisory/data systems, including:
PLC/HMI platforms (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.)
Resolve PLC/HMI issues (hands-on programming not required; Standardize integration templates (tags, alarms, connectivity) as Nova matures its digital architecture.
Author and maintain engineering documents: Partner with Manufacturing Engineering, Safety, Quality, Operations, Facilities, and R&D to deliver results.

Advanced mechanical and electrical troubleshooting capabilities.
Strong mastery of PLC systems (Allen-Bradley, Siemens) - required, not optional.
Strong understanding of controls engineering, industrial automation architecture, sensors, instrumentation, motion, and communication protocols.
Experience with SCADA, PI Historian, and equipment data integration - required.
Hands-on experience with robotics/cobots, automated systems, and industrial vision systems.
Proficient in SolidWorks and AutoCAD for equipment and system documentation.
Experienced in writing and maintaining URS, FRS, validation documents (IQ/OQ/PQ), test protocols, and change controls.
Proficient with Microsoft Office, Minitab, and SAP.
Ability to manage multiple automation projects simultaneously from concept through deployment.
Strong cross-functional collaboration with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Operations, Facilities, and R&D.
Hands-on, proactive approach with strong floor presence.
Ability to prioritize and manage work across multiple sites.
Motivated to grow into advanced controls integration, SCADA/MES development, and enterprise-level automation strategy.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or related engineering field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
Minimum of 8 years of experience in automation and/or manufacturing floor support, preferably within medical device, diagnostics, biotech, or other regulated industries.
Proven experience supporting automation systems, equipment integration, and troubleshooting.
Demonstrated experience delivering URS/FRS, engineering specifications, FAT/SAT, and technical documentation.
Ability to read, create, and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, PLC/HMI logic flow, and system documentation.
PLC programming software (Rockwell Allen-Bradley Studio 5000, Siemens, or equivalent)
HMI platforms
Robotics / cobots

Experience with manufacturing data and automation platforms:
Equipment connectivity and data integration

ISA Certified Automation Professional or similar credentials preferred.
Must live within commuting distance of Waltham, Norwood, and Billerica (no relocation assistance provided).
Willingness and flexibility to travel regularly across Nova's Massachusetts sites based on business need.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while on the production floor or in the lab (up to 4-6 hours/day).

Ability to climb stairs or ladders occasionally to access equipment or elevated workspaces.

Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including lab coats, gloves, goggles, face shields, and respiratory protection, as required.
Ability to work in various operations such as chemical processing, PCB, warehouses, analyzer assembly, consumable processing of sensors and strips.
Ability to sit for extended periods when performing administrative tasks (computer work, meetings, reporting, etc.).
