Job Overview
City of Hampton Fire and Rescue Division seeks Certified VA Firefighter I & II firefighters, EMT, AEMT, EMT‑I, and EMT‑P professionals to serve the community.

Responsibilities

Respond to fire alarms and other emergency calls, set up hoses and equipment, and direct suppression activities.

Operate ladders and other access tools to gain entry to burning structures and rescue individuals.

Conduct firefighting operations, including creating openings in buildings for ventilation, ingress, and egress using axes, crowbars, and other tools.

Perform salvage and preservation of property to minimize fire loss; protect property from water and smoke.

Provide emergency medical care to the sick and injured: bandaging, splinting, administering oxygen, performing CPR, and transporting patients to hospitals.

Operate and maintain apparatus: inspect fire apparatus daily, check oil, coolant, batteries, tires, and communications equipment, and perform maintenance and cleaning.

Conduct drills, demonstrations, and courses in hydraulics, pump operation, maintenance, and firefighting techniques; inspect buildings for fire hazards.

Drive fire apparatus, EMS vehicles, and support vehicles to emergency scenes, make adjustments as needed, maintain vehicle operation, and communicate with dispatcher via radio.

Perform other assigned duties, including vehicle and station maintenance, inventory, reporting, training, safety inspections, and accident reports.

Qualifications

Must be 18 years of age or older.

High school graduation or GED equivalent.

Certified VA Firefighter I & II.

Certified as EMT, AEMT, EMT‑I, or EMT‑P.

Meet medical standards and pass the department’s physical agility test.

Successful completion of the application process, background investigation, and polygraph examination.

Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

Ability to perform the physical demands of firefighting and emergency medical services.

Effective communication skills, ability to write reports, and proficiency with radios and computers.

Willingness to complete additional training such as Hazardous Materials Operations, EVOC, DPO, and FEMA courses.

Features

Shifts include 8‑hour, 12‑hour, 24‑hour, or other arrangements, up to 56 hours per workweek.

Potential rotation among medic and firefighter positions across the division.

Formal performance evaluations at required intervals.

Requires working under hazardous conditions and in confined or high‑risk areas.

Non‑exempt position governed by Fair Labor Standards Act.
