CLS - Lab Chemistry

Under the general direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical procedures and analyses to provide data for health maintenance, diagnoses, treatment and monitoring of medical conditions; enhances quality of patient care and service through interdepartmental cooperation and quality assurance protocols; cross-matches blood for transfusion; and oversees the work of lab assistants and other non-certified personnel.

CLS generalist: experience in blood bank required; knowledge of hematology, chemistry, microbiology and immunology at a level required in medical technology desirable.

• Current (or temporary) California CLS License; Knowledge and practice of standard precautions and policies related to handling of potentially infectious agents
• Knowledge of safety procedures relating to operation of laboratory equipment and handling of chemicals
• Technical and analytical skills for analysis and interpretation of test procedures and results in order to determine appropriate correction action for abnormal or atypical results
• Bachelor of Science degree in clinical laboratory or related sciences
• Minimum Experience: 0 to 6 months, preferably in a hospital lab setting
• Preferred Experience: 1 to 2 years, with at least 6 months in a hospital setting
• Good computer skills to enter information and run reports
• Must be willing to work night shifts, share holidays and on-call duty. The ability to adapt to unexpected changes and emergency situations is desirable.

In addition to acute care and surgical services, the hospital provides emergency services. The hospital operates several outpatient clinics, including surgery, orthopedic, occupational health, pain management, wound care, behavioral health, three primary care clinics, and two physical therapy/sports rehabilitation clinics in Arcata and Willow Creek. There is a 2-acre on-site farm that provides our cafeteria with produce for serving patients and staff.
