The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Radiology is seeking a Paramedic to provide specialized patient care within the highly regulated environment of the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Imaging Center. This position is responsible for assessing patients' care needs, delivering and evaluating high-quality clinical care, and applying evidence-based practices to support safe and effective imaging procedures. The Paramedic collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, technologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure exceptional patient outcomes while providing leadership and support to maintain the highest standards of patient care, safety, and operational excellence.
Assesses patient health care preferences and expectations.
Provides pre, intra- and post procedure nursing care (assessment, monitoring, intervention and education) related to diagnostic and interventional procedures.
Assists in the collection of arterial and venous blood samples.
Prepares and completes daily patient workup for next day's scheduled patients, including PET/CT, PET/MRI and research patients.
Completes, documents, and files required daily/weekly/monthly equipment checks and clinic audits.
Documents and reports interventions and patient/family response/education.
Implements interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and staff. Completes Point of Care (POC) testing.
Administers pharmaceuticals.
Knowledge of drug and medical terminology.
Knowledge of most common emergency drugs and their uses and usual doses.
Knowledge of institutional and unit policies, processes, and forms.
Ability to use a computer.
Ability to maintain and stock inventory.
Ability to alter work schedule to meet unit/patient needs.
Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, patients and the public.
Ability to precept EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and Paramedic students.
