Job Description

The purpose of the class is the provision of library services to meet the informational, educational, and recreational needs of the community. The class is responsible for staff supervision, acquisitions, technical services, records, and reports. The class works within broad policy and organizational guidelines; independently plans and implements projects; reports progress of major activities through periodic conferences and meetings.

Example Of Duties

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Answers reference and research inquiries; strives to resolve patron problems and concerns relating to late fees and/or unreturned books. Assists the public at service desks, checks out materials, retrieves reference sources, answers reference questions, makes recommendations, issues library cards, collects fees and provides information as requested. Ensures that equipment and facilities used by the public are in working order on a daily basis; advises patrons on the use of computer resources, operations and the Internet; may maintain and upgrade computer and Internet equipment servers and services. Maintains library collections through acquisition, cataloging, binding, and weeding within established guidelines. May plan, organize, provide, and publicize library programs. Prepares grant applications and oversees project implementation. May be responsible for a department (i.e. Children's, Serials), branch, service (i.e. databases, Internet, Library Network, circulation, Library for the Blind), or activity (supplies, publicity or displays). Compiles statistics and prepares reports.

Typical Qualifications

Master's degree in Library Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association. Must be certified as a Librarian or able to obtain certification within six months of employment by the Georgia State Board for the Certification of Librarians. The ability to obtain and maintain valid Georgia Drivers license.
