Salary Instructional Support IS5 187 Days Min. $36,430

Primary Purpose: To implement and assist the Flex LVN under the direction of the licensed Registered Nurse (RN), programs and processes that provide services to students in order to promote the optimum health of each student and to positively impact attendance and student achievement which includes serving in a clinical, classroom or itinerant role in which the specific duties and responsibilities may overlap.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High School Diploma or GED

Licensed as a Vocational Nurse in the State of Texas issued by the Board of Nursing

Graduation from a state approved accredited School of Vocational Nursing

Maintain continuing education credits as required by the Board of Nursing

Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and in Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)

Valid Texas Driver License with reliable transportation

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of common pediatric acute, emergent and chronic health conditions

Proficient nursing assessment skills in people of all ages

Knowledge of basic first aid and emergency treatment

Knowledge of safety principles and infection control in the patient care environment

Knowledge and application of Universal Precautions and proper handling techniques of hazardous materials

Knowledge of technical content of the position as well as the ability to apply these skills to health-related issues

Skill in assessing patient needs in order to coordinate the appropriate nursing care plan

Proficient in the use of electronic medical records, electronic file management and the use of Google platform

Ability to be available for assignment to a different campus

Ability to accept supervision and directions from principal, teacher and campus RN

Ability to comply with standards of care as outlined by the Board of Nurse Examiners for licensure

Ability to comply with federal guidelines regarding confidentiality of individual student/family issues and concerns (HIPAA, FERPA)

Ability to prioritize tasks and coordinate multiple projects to meet specific deadlines

Ability to maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information

Ability to maintain professional behavior, appearance, and work ethic to represent the school district in a positive manner at all times

Ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy, provide a high level of customer service, and work compatibly with students, administrators, District officials, parents, co-workers, and the general public

Experience:

Specific 2 years nursing experience in relevant area(s) of practice preferred

Evidence of ventilator training course completion within the last 5 years preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Campus Clinical Setting:

Provide direct care for students with acute and chronic medical illness and injury using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, individualized healthcare plans (IHPs), and established District health protocols.

Administer first aid in school health emergencies. Secure emergency medical care for students as needed.

Communicate with families regularly and notifications of accident or illness as needed.

Provide health counseling to assist students and their families to obtain treatment through referral and follow up processes.

Serve as a liaison between school personnel, the family, healthcare professionals, and the community.

Serve as a health advocate for students.

Administration of individual and stock medications according to district policy and procedures.

Follow procedures for performing and documenting state mandated screenings, including reassessments, referrals and parent/guardian follow up.

Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through immunization programs, surveillance, early intervention, reporting and follow up in accordance with Texas Department of State Health Services guidelines.

Provide thorough, concise and accurate documentation including, but not limited to, assessments, planning, communication and referrals.

Cross train to ensure competencies in the procedures of special needs students when coverage is required.

Relieve and/or provide assistance to nursing personnel in special needs areas as needed.

Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.

Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rules, State Board of Education rules, and Board of Nursing policy. Comply with all district and campus policies, guidelines and regulations.

Report potential health and safety hazards to the Registered Nurse.

Classroom/Life Skills Setting:

Provide direct care utilizing school health protocols and care plans.

Administration of individual and stock medications according to district policy and procedures.

Assist the parent and RN in development of IHP

Implement and maintain IHPs which may include performing health care procedures such as suctioning, tracheostomy care, gastrostomy care and tube feedings, urinary catheterizations, respiratory treatments, and colostomy care as ordered by a physician and in accordance with LVN's educational training.

Maintain current competencies for all medical procedures required by Health Services.

Ride school bus and provide care for the student while being transported if required by the IHP

Assist in daily living activities such as feeding and diapering.

Recognize, treat, and document signs and symptoms of illness or injury in medical needs students.

Provide thorough, concise and accurate documentation including, but not limited to, assessments, planning, communication and referrals. Maintain daily documentation of student care.

Provide basic first aid care for minor injuries and illnesses and obtain necessary assistance from RN in cases of serious trauma and/or illness.

Communicate daily with essential staff and the supervising RN any possible communicable diseases, any changes in students' health status, and any family needs or concerns.

Monitor and maintain skin integrity on physically immobile students by appropriate positioning and repositioning including placing them in therapeutic equipment and assisting in therapeutic exercises as medically prescribed.

Participate in ARDS and IEP meetings as appropriate.

When not involved in nursing functions, provide instructional support and assistance in implementation of IEP goals and objectives as directed.

Participate in field trips, cafeteria, playground, and bus loading duties.

Identify and work toward the elimination of unsafe or unhealthful work area conditions.

Itinerant Setting:

Serve at multiple campus sites as needed and as assigned by the Health Services leadership team.

Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health Services rules, Texas Education Agency, and Humble ISD Board policy.

Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.

Secure all information required for the maintenance of student health records in the electronic school health record, including but not limited to clinic visit documentation, referral and communication events, immunization records and medication and procedure administration records.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Provide oversight to student(s) under care.

Maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information.
