SCHOOL NURSE

Valid RN license

Negative TB test or screening result (completed within the last 12 months)
Emergency First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training certification

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position performs intermediate professional work ensuring the health of students in schools by maintaining and operating a school clinic and providing nursing care to students. Work is performed under regular supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Provides nursing care and physical screening to students.
Maintains and operates a school clinic.
Prepares and maintains students' confidential files and cumulative health and immunization records for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards.
Provides health care services to students in school system.
Performs nursing assessment of each student sent to school health clinic.
Makes observations and assesses condition.
Implements health care plan for student as needed.
After observation and assessment, counsels with student, parents, and/or teachers about problems observed.
Ensures compliance with all laws-including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) -to protect the confidentiality of medical information and obtain written consent of parent/guardian to share information.
Administers medications and first aid.
Screens and tests students for hearing and vision problems, height, weight, and blood pressure.
Refers students for medical care as needed.
Responds to emergency medical situations, providing necessary medical intervention and coordinating immediate response and follow-up care.
Observes students for communicable diseases.
Performs specialized procedures.
Keeps logs of visits and care given.
Maintains adequate clinic supplies; ensures proper supplies are available as needed
Provides instruction on nutrition, hygiene, grooming, weight control, first aid, disease prevention, substance abuse, and related health concerns.
Provides preliminary screening for physical exam of special education.
Orients the staff and teaches specific medical procedures for the evaluation and maintenance of medically involved students in the classroom.
Ensures compliance with required immunizations.
Provides health counseling to students, parents, and other school personnel.
Maintains clinic cleanliness.
Maintains records of treatment and performs follow up tasks.
Assists in developing and implementing school-wide health policies and procedures that also include the Department of Social Services.
Provides health educational materials and information.
Serves as a nurse for disaster shelter when assigned.
Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or a closely related field.
At least two years of experience as a professional registered nurse.
Possession of a valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia; in good standing.

KNKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the preliminary diagnosis of medical problems.
Knowledge of common medical practices, procedures, and techniques associated with a standard physical examination.
Knowledge of the administration of medications related to treatment and first aid.
Skill in applying therapeutic treatments as required.
Ability to follow technical oral and written instructions in exact detail.
Ability to maintain accurate records.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students, teachers, physicians and parents.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• The work environment is primarily inside; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
• The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
• This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Work requires kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
