Physician- Staff Psychiatrist (Mental Health)

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are not eligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet basic requirements listed below and any specific additional requirements stated in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but must not be hired until all requirements are met. Physicians currently employed in the VA who met the previous qualification standard at the time of initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy).

Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.

Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year completed.

Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.

Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification.

Approved residencies include ACGME or AOA accredited programs (list published for the year completed).

OR one year of post‑medical‑school training approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S.

OR non‑U.S. residency followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. involving duties related to the position.

Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in accredited programs who otherwise meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).

PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis.

PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged.

PRPs have a scope of practice that allows restricted duties under supervision.

Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.

In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may submit a memo to the VISN Director for reasonable exceptions to the residency requirement.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

Preferred qualifications reference:

Preferred experience: Over 3 years of full‑time clinical experience at the attending level, board certification in Psychiatry by the ABPN, prior trainee experience at VAMHCS or another VA Maryland license, addiction psychiatry training, and experience prescribing buprenorphine, clozapine, and/or long‑acting injectable antipsychotics.

Physical Requirements

Light lifting (under 15 lbs.).

Light carrying (under 15 lbs.).

Reaching above shoulder.

Use of fingers.

Walking (intermittent).

Standing (intermittent).

Hearing (aid permitted).

Clear speech.

The work is sedentary; employee may sit comfortably but may walk, stand, bend, and carry light items.

Duties

Provide individual treatment using evidence‑based interventions for Veterans with PTSD, substance use disorder, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, severe and persistent mental illness, personality disorders, and other disabling affective and anxiety disorders.

Conduct assessment and diagnosis of mental health conditions.

Provide psychopharmacologic treatment.

Work schedule: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday–Friday.
