Position Summary San Diego State University is seeking a skilled and dependable Facilities Maintenance Mechanic to support the maintenance, repair, installation, and preventive care of campus HVAC and mechanical systems. This role helps ensure safe, reliable, and efficient building operations through hands‑on maintenance, emergency response, and renovation support.
Key Responsibilities Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC equipment, plumbing systems, cooling towers, pumps, motors, and related mechanical components.
Respond to service requests and emergency calls by restoring air flow, temperature, humidity, and repairing utility distribution systems.
Assist with HVAC renovations and equipment installations, including piping, ductwork, wiring, thermostats, and related systems.
Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, testing, and troubleshooting to maximize equipment performance and minimize downtime.
Support HVAC system upgrades and maintenance projects under the direction of journey-level staff.
Trades & Mechanical Room Support
Assist journey-level trades personnel with maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction projects.
Perform general maintenance and minor interior and exterior repairs as assigned.
Maintain mechanical rooms, utility systems, and related equipment to support safe and efficient operations.
Support essential campus HVAC and mechanical systems.
Gain hands‑on experience working alongside skilled trades professionals.
Contribute to safe, reliable, and efficient campus facilities.

Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. Department Summary The Division of Business and Financial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a safe, productive campus environment while providing the highest quality service in support of academic excellence through thoughtful stewardship of financial, technological, infrastructure, and human resources at San Diego State University.
The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs over 200 employees (full time and students) and supports approximately 8 million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land.
The Office of Housing Administration (OHA) is a self‑funded operation responsible for planning, providing, and administering housing operations, services, and facilities with over 100 employees and more than 150 student assistants. With an annual operating budget exceeding $159 million, OHA provides housing for over 9,000 students, live‑in professional staff, and faculty across 25 residential buildings totaling more than 2 million square feet of residential facilities. OHA also operates SDSU-IV housing at the Imperial Valley campus. OHA manages the operation of residence halls, apartments, and conference and event spaces. In partnership with the Residential Education Office (REO), OHA supports the educational mission of the university while providing the business operations for all housing‑related functions, ensuring a high‑quality environment that enhances the student educational experience.

Education and Experience The abilities normally would be acquired through four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey‑level skills in a mechanical or facilities/building trade, or any equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities and systems mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey‑level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program.
Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems and renovations.
Must have the ability to understand and apply university and departmental policies and procedures.
Prior experience, within the previous three years, in a large multi‑building facility operation performing maintenance and repair work.
Completion of training/coursework in HVAC, electrical theory or mechanical equipment/systems preferred.
Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, in alignment with the department’s budget and equity guidelines.
Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.
