Position Overview

Senior Attorney – District 6 Chief Counsel’s office, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Miami, FL. This is a SES-level position in the Office of the General Counsel statewide team.

Salary and Benefits

Annual Salary: $85,000 – $95,000.

Responsibilities

The Senior Attorney will:

Provide legal counsel and advice on day‑to‑day operations, including negotiation, drafting, and review of contracts, funding agreements, joint project agreements, intergovernmental agreements, permits, and real‑estate acquisition documents.

Represent FDOT in all phases of eminent domain proceedings, including research, pleadings, discovery, witness preparation, hearings, settlement negotiations, and trial.

Prepare real‑estate conveyance documents and defend the Department in claims of inverse condemnation.

Research state and federal statutes, cases, rules, and regulations affecting District office operations; advise on legal powers, duties, and policy implementation.

Support Department attorneys in claims and litigation, and assist with public records requests and subpoenas as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Litigation and civil rules of procedure and practice; Government in the Sunshine Law.

Effective verbal and written communication.

Understanding and application of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Problem‑solving techniques, independent work, planning, organization, and coordination of work assignments.

Strong oral and written communication; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Proficiency with word processing, graphic presentation software, database, and mainframe applications.

Licensure and Registration

Must be a member of the Florida Bar.

Other Job‑Related Requirements

Overnight travel required.

Level 1 Background Check required.

Special Requirements
