Histotechnologist for Research Hospital

Under the general supervision of the Medical Directors, Site Manager and the Gross Room Supervisor / Morgue Supervisor depending on rotation, the incumbent receives, accessions, and prepares or "grosses in" specified surgical specimens which includes biopsies and larger specimens: examines the specimen grossly, weighs, measures, fixes, inks, cuts representative samples, cassettes and submits the specimens for histological processing, dictates clinical description for report transcription, contacts clinicians / surgeons regarding clinical information, and enters information into the Pathology computer system. assists with specimen photography; Must be able to work variable schedules and rotate at other sites as needed. Incumbent may also assist with autopsies and other Morgue duties, embed tissues and other duties in Histology or Electron Microscopy Laboratories. The classification of Histotechnologist 1 or Histotechnologist 2 will be determined based upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.
%The time spent in each of the following functions is determined by the Supervisor, Gross Room Advisor, Administrative Director and/or Medical Director).
* Performs gross sectioning of various types of biopsy specimens: weighs, measures, divides, cassettes and submits "Rush" specimens by cut-off time, dictates gross description of clinical data and specimen size, inks specimens as required for visualization or orientation, documents special instructions, enters Histology data in the computer system utilizing barcoding system, loads Histology tissue processors as needed.
Works proactively with Histology lab staff to ensure optimal tissue fixation of specimens submitted by the Pathology Residents, advising Pathology Residents as needed.
- Upon completion of training regimens as determined by the Medical Director and Supervisor, and under the direct supervision of a pathologist, performs gross sectioning of specified less complex to complex surgical specimens as determined by the Medical Director. Maintains high-level communications with residents assigned to the case.
- 15Yes MORGUE TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Informs residents about the legal aspects of autopsies and permit requirements associated with the autopsy. Coordinates procedure with residents, attendings, clinicians and other hospital personnel.
- Transfers the body from the morgue refrigerator and places the body on the table.
- Decontaminates tables, instruments, and equipment following autopsies and conferences.
- Notifies Patient Relations or ED Registration when autopsy is completed.
- Accessions autopsy data in CoPath accurately.
- Prepares fixatives and other laboratory reagents.
* MORGUE OPERATIONS:
- Responsible for maintaining protocol in the receipt and release of bodies from the morgue, including reviewing release documents for completeness and validity.
- As required, harvests tissue for research projects following protocols as directed.
- Maintains pathology specimen filing system: Rinses and bags tissue for disposal under direction of Medical Director. Retains and disposes of specimens in the Morgue storage room following Dept./Medical Center requirements.
- Assists with radiography and photography of specimens, including special diagnostic procedures, and managing digital gross photography archive system.
- 5Yes HISTOLOGY LAB TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
* ROUTINE HISTOLOGY:
Meets highest levels of productivity and quality.
- Routinely sections specimens following the most difficult sectioning specifications regarding thickness, orientation, serial sectioning, sectioning for PCR and in situ work-up. Maintains the highest level of productivity (20-25 blocks/hour) while preparing superior quality slides.
- Oversight of inventory of control blocks used for special stains. In addition to operations oversight of staining and processing areas, manages specific assignments within the lab, e.g. department files, coordination of lab in-services, performance improvement projects, etc.
* LABORATORY OPERATION:
Maintains QC documentation files. Assists Lab Manager as designated in completion of annual safety requirements, which may include annual safety training schedule, air monitoring, respirator testing. Assists in assuring compliance with technical and general policies and procedures. Determines need, advises lab manager and oversee repair of equipment for the area of responsibility. 5Yes CYTOLOGY LAB TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides technical support to the cytology laboratory by forwarding specimens to the cytology laboratory. Gynecological material is accessioned, bar-coded and prepared on a multiload T3 processor. Prepares urinary sample as requested for ImmunoCyt fluorescent testing. Prepares and documents research cases as requested. Provides basic maintenance and troubleshooting for automation in the lab, including the automatic stainer, coverslipper, ThinPrep processor, multiload processor and imaging station.

- 5Yes EM LAB TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Technical components include specimen receipt, gross evaluation, fixation, tissue processing, thick sectioning, ultrathin sectioning, and operation of the electron microscope including electron microscopic examination and photography, and darkroom printing of micrographs. Maintains high level of communication with pathologists regarding specimen quality, amount, and adequacy. Documents work promptly, adherence to established processing schedules, maintains complete accuracy in labeling throughout, complete adherence to Standard Precautions and chemical safety standards. Cuts sections which are free of sectioning and staining artifact. Completion of a degree in a biological science including course-work in Anatomy or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience to include 2 years of coursework with a minimum of 60 semester hours of college courses, including 24 semester hours of relevant science courses (chemistry, biology, anatomy) plus experience as a surgical gross-room technician.
Excellent data entry, word processing, spelling, grammar, and editing skills.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Histotechnologist Lead: Four year college degree in a biological science or equivalent including 5 years surgical pathology experience cutting in (grossing) biopsies, performing frozen sections, with at least 4 years of that experience cutting in complex specimens.
Histotechnologist III: Four year college degree in a biological science or equivalent including 3 years surgical pathology experience cutting in (grossing) biopsies, performing frozen sections, with at least 1 year of that experience cutting in complex specimens.
Histotechnologist II: Four year college degree in a biological science or equivalent including 2 years surgical pathology experience cutting in (grossing) biopsies, performing frozen sections and expected successful completion of department training program cutting in complex surgical specimens.
Histotechnologist I: Four year college degree in a biological science or equivalent combination education and experience in a hospital surgical pathology laboratory, including some demonstrated experience performing cryostat sectioning, staining or histology techniques.
The classification of Histotechnologist 1 or Histotechnologist 2 will be determined based upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Bachelor's degree in biological science with experience in hospital gross room setting.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
