Assistant CustodianReports to: Head Custodian, Building Administration and Maintenance SupervisorEmployment Status: Regular/Full-timeProvide a clean and safe environment for students and staff. Perform general custodial duties, e.g., empty trash, vacuum carpet, sweep and mop. Assist head custodian in cleaning, maintaining and daily operation of school building.The below lists are not ranked in order of importanceEssential Functions:Ensure safety of studentsSweep, vacuum, mop and wax floorsEmpty and clean waste receptacles, trash pails, and pencil sharpenersRemove cobwebs and clean windowsClean furniture and woodworkClean and maintain custodial equipment and materialsPromote good safety practices and proceduresClean and sanitize assigned school, e.g., restrooms, classrooms, water coolers, spills, etc.Help with setup and cleanup for various school activitiesUse, measure and relabel chemicalsClean carpetsWash furniture, walls, halls, windows, window seals, and doorsSpot mop and mop classroomsRemove writing on wallsMaintain respect at all times for confidential informationPromote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation with staff, students and parentsDispose of debris and maintain equipment, supplies, work and storage areas in a neat and orderly mannerReport to head custodian any damaged, broken, loose fixtures and/or equipmentAdjust to various locations and work requirements as needed, perform other duties as assigned by the building Administrators and Maintenance SupervisorRequest needed equipment, materials and suppliesRefill soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers and bathroom tissue in all school building restroomsSecure building nightlyMinimal paperwork as required upon request of building Administrators or Maintenance SupervisorPromote good safety practices and proceduresAttend meetings and in-services as required by contractMaintain a daily work routine as established by the building Administration and the Maintenance Supervisor to adequately service the buildings and groundsCheck building to assure maximum securitySweep, clean, mop, wash, wax, dust, wipe and vacuum surfaces to maintain cleanliness throughout building and groundsTour building periodically and remain alert for dangerous, hazardous conditions, or items in need of maintenanceClean school building lounges and hallway glass display cases (cases in summer)Other Duties and Responsibilities:Scrub, strip, seal, and wax floorsServe as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beingsRespond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate mannerAssist with major repairsAssist in the control of all maintenance and custodial tools and suppliesPerform other duties as assigned by the building Administrators and Maintenance SupervisorQualifications:High school diploma or general education degree (GED)One to two years related experience desiredMust be able to demonstrate the ability to use most common hand toolsSuch alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriateRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Ability to work effectively with othersAbility to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writingEffective, active listening skillsOrganizational and problem solving skillsFlexibility in assignmentsTraining in the proper care and storage of chemicalsKnowledge of appropriate safety proceduresAbility to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings and labelsWorking knowledge of assigned building and alarm systemsEquipment Operated:Various hand and plumbing toolsVacuum cleanersWet and dry vacLaddersFloor scrubbersVarious power toolsScrubbers and buffersPower washerStripping machinePortable air compressorHand cartsAdditional Working Conditions:Frequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissueOccasional climbing of ladders and stairsFrequent requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see (occasional color vision required), read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, climb, balance, kneel and stoopOccasional excessive standing, (i.e. to perform repairs and routine maintenance)Occasional requirement to walk in excess of 2-3 miles per dayOccasional request to work overtime (optional)Occasional requirement to push and pull various items up to a maximum of 300 pounds (on wheels)Occasional requirement to lift and carry various items up to a maximum of 65 poundsPerform other duties as assigned by the building administration and/or maintenance supervisor
