Salary Range: $18.31 To $19.50 Hourly

Pathways to Independence, Inc. is a private nonprofit organization providing pre-vocational and vocational training opportunities to adults with disabilities. PTI was founded in 1978, as a sheltered workshop, by a group of concerned community members who recognized the need in the West Hudson, South Bergen areas for vocational training and employment for persons with disabilities. Since then, the agency has continued to expand its spectrum of services to include assisting people with various disabilities in pertinent employment settings.

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with developmental, intellectual, or physical disabilities by providing compassionate and personalized care. This position involves supporting clients in their daily activities, promoting independence, and fostering community integration. The DSP collaborates closely with families, healthcare providers, and other team members to implement individualized care plans that meet each client’s unique needs. Through patience, empathy, and professionalism, the DSP helps clients achieve their personal goals and maintain their dignity and well-being. High school diploma or equivalent.

Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities or in a caregiving role.

Training or coursework related to developmental disabilities or behavioral health.

Familiarity with electronic documentation systems and care management software.

Assist clients with activities of daily living including personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication administration, and mobility support.

Implement individualized support plans by following specific instructions and adapting to the evolving needs of each client.

Encourage and facilitate community participation and social interaction to promote independence and inclusion.

Monitor and document client progress, behaviors, and any changes in health or well-being, communicating effectively with supervisors and healthcare professionals.

Provide emotional support and build trusting relationships with clients to foster a safe and positive environment.

The required skills such as effective communication and the ability to follow care plans are essential for daily interactions with clients and team members, ensuring that support is consistent and tailored. Empathy and patience are critical in building trust and providing emotional support, which helps clients feel valued and understood. Organizational skills are used to accurately document client progress and manage time efficiently across multiple responsibilities. Additionally, familiarity with technology enhances the ability to maintain precise records and coordinate care within a multidisciplinary team.
