Provide professional oncology/infusion nursing care according to Oncology Nursing Society standards and Infusion Nursing Society standards.
Administer comprehensive clinical therapeutic infusion services such as complex chemotherapy regimens, immunotherapy, blood products, antibiotics, iron and hydration therapies.
Perform phlebotomy and therapeutic phlebotomy services.
Maintain and care for vascular access devices, both central and peripheral.
Demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge of mechanical patient lift.
Review laboratory test results and report clinically significant results to the medical provider.
Perform assessments of all assigned patients prior to therapy and ongoing assessments during treatment to ensure patient safety and stability.
Recognize adverse signs and symptoms which are not always apparent and react promptly in emergency situations, including the implementation of life‑saving procedures and acting as a member of the Rapid Response Team for the infusion center and oncology clinic.
Document in the electronic health record current condition and report significant changes to the medical provider.
Validate chemotherapy/immunotherapy orders and other medical provider orders for accuracy.
Educate patients, family members, and caregivers on infusion therapies and treatment processes.
Provide one‑hour pre‑chemotherapy/immunotherapy education sessions to oncology patients when the nurse practitioner is unavailable.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary professional staff, patients, family, and caregivers to ensure appropriate clinical follow‑up plans and continuity of care.
Act as a clinical resource on chemotherapy/immunotherapy administration for inpatient nurses, providing a four‑hour clinical introduction to chemotherapy/immunotherapy administration.
Maintain records, inventory, and physical security of drugs and medical supplies; Adhere to infection control practices to maintain a safe infusion center environment; manage the interface between the patient and medical technology to ensure a safe, respectful, and humane environment.
Evaluate one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations, identifying short and long‑term professional goals.
Utilize the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with interpretive statements as the foundation for nursing practice; adhere to up‑to‑date ONS/INS and institutional policies and procedures to administer infusion services.
Interact with and contribute to the professional development of peers and others practicing within a shared governance model of nursing practice.
Make decisions so that actions taken on behalf of patients are determined in an ethical manner, and care is delivered in a non‑judgmental and non‑discriminatory manner that is sensitive to patient diversity, preserving patient autonomy, dignity, and rights.
Collaborate with the patient, family, caregivers, and other health care providers in the formation of overall goals and the plan of care as well as in decisions related to care and the delivery of services.
Consider factors related to safety, effectiveness, evidence‑based practice, and cost in planning and delivering patient care, and assist patients and families in identifying and securing appropriate and available services to address health‑related needs.
Knowledge of oncology/infusion and general nursing principles, techniques, and procedures for patient care.
Knowledge of nursing science, principles, techniques, and procedures for patient care.
Knowledge of healthcare terminology, anatomy, physiology, and concepts of disease.
Knowledge and ability to utilize evidence‑based practice to develop the plan of care and interventions.
Knowledge of hospital and specialty clinic environments and how the services and functions interact; Knowledge of nursing theorists and ability to provide theory‑based care for patients; Skill in critical thinking to provide effective and compassionate nursing care, assessing patients and taking effective courses of action.
Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands from patients, families, and team members.
Skill in evaluating health problems and making recommendations based on observations.
Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
Associate’s degree in Nursing.
Current registered nurse license in the state of Alaska; Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
One (1) year of oncology/infusion nursing experience.
