Part Time Van Drive

Summary

Education Alternatives is seeking van drivers for the Painesville location. Van Drivers are paid hourly and are responsible for driving clients on an agency owned vehicle to and from our sites located throughout the greater Akron/Cleveland area and on field trips to various locations. This position is a part-time hourly position, Monday through Friday. Ohio Department of Education Certification training will be provided by Education Alternatives.

Applicants must be at least 25 years old

Must hold a valid Ohio driver’s license

Must have a good driving record, as determined by the Ohio Department of Education

Must be able to pass a pre‑service physical and drug test

Must not have a criminal background that would disqualify applicant from working with children

Skills – specific skill‑based competencies required: adhering to safety practice, administering first aid, applying pertinent policies, regulations and/or laws; operating agency vehicles, fire extinguisher, cell phone, and standard office equipment; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge – read manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, present information to others; analyze situations to define issues. Required knowledge includes basic vehicle maintenance; first aid; health standards and hazards; cell phone communication; using wheelchairs, tie‑downs, child safety seats, lifts, etc.

Ability – attention to detail; communicating with diverse groups including school‑age riders; displaying tact and courtesy; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; exercising sound judgment; understanding special needs of students and parents; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; and working with constant distractions.

Working Conditions

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking and 10% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Responsibilities

Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.

Be able to work with clients with emotional and behavioral disabilities and intervene when necessary for the purpose of ensuring order and safety.

Assists clients and other passengers (e.g. seating, restraints, special equipment, etc.) for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from vehicles including both emergency situations and normal transport.

Advise clients and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing established guidelines and maintaining passenger safety.

Safely transport clients to/from their residence to/from their designated drop off point in a timely manner.

Informs day treatment personnel and parents of events, policies and/or practices (e.g. schedules tops, established routes, route conditions, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or clarification of procedures.

Responds to inquiries from clients, parents, and/or staff for the purpose of providing the necessary information regarding transportation services.

Maintains assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior (e.g. cleaning floors/windows/seats, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle.

Fuels assigned vehicle for the purpose of maintaining vehicle and keeping it in safe operating condition.

Monitors passengers during transit for maintaining order and ensuring passenger safety.

Performs first aid as necessary for the purpose of meeting the immediate health care needs of passengers.

Maintain ongoing communication with staff including: Teachers, Building Directors, Fleet Manager and Director of Transportation for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information.

Prepares documentation (e.g. daily log, incident reports, behavior rating, mileage) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.

Conduct safety checks on van before each departure and submit a daily pre‑trip inspection form for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and meeting state requirements.

Attend all agency trainings, including quarterly in‑service trainings, for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting agency requirements.
