Security Guard 1 / On-Call
- This position will remain on-call and will not become permanent.
- *This posting will be used to fill two (2) positions that are on call for various shifts that include evenings and weekends, and to cover shifts primarily for planned absences of day shift staff and/or to provide security during programs or rental events.
--If you do not have a reasonable amount of availability for these shifts you should not apply.
Schedule: Varies according to need, but will include day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts not to exceed 69 hours per month.
**Not eligible for telework.
You will be vital to the success of the organization by providing superior front-line customer service to visitors, safety and security of the buildings, its contents, and occupants. You will ensure that a detailed account of safety and security tasks are recorded accurately, timely, and concisely. You will ensure the building is free from safety hazards and correct &/or report any deficiencies for action.
A little about us: Founded in 1891 and now into its second century of service, the Washington State Historical Society is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and vividly presenting Washington's diverse and storied history. Our mission is to partner with our communities to explore how history connects us all. The Society serves individuals and organizations statewide through publications, outreach programs, curriculum, free virtual public programs, and other online services. The Museum traditionally serves more than 80,000 annually, including more than 15,000 K-12 school children visiting the museum on a field trip. Our Heritage Capital Projects grant program distributes up to $10M per biennium to fund public heritage, history interpretation, and historic preservation projects across the state. And the Historical Society's collections at our Research Center, along with a digital collections database, are a resource to scholars and researchers from across the nation.
We expand our impact by connecting with communities across the Evergreen State through exhibitions, heritage projects, workshops, public programs, publications, and conversations. Provide written daily security report
Provide security report for observed discrepancies and/or incidents
Enforce museum rules and policies, and monitor and enforce parking lot rules and fees
Provide visitor assistance
Observe and report safety and security matters
Enter parking registration information & violation information
Remove trash and recycling from building and grounds
High School diploma or GED
- 1-year prior experience in security, military basic training, or law enforcement

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs. For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. Holidays
Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.
Note: Employees who are members of certain Unions may be entitled to additional personal leave day(s), please refer to position specific Collective Bargaining Agreements for more information.
Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday.
Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave.
Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.
Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.
Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
Note: Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.
