Legal & Compliance: Senior Counsel

Teal Energi is partnered with a privately held energy company that is seeking an experienced Senior Counsel to serve as its lead internal legal advisor supporting commodity trading, marketing, and commercial operations across U.This is a front‑office, transactional role focused on advising the business in real time on physical and financial energy transactions.

This individual will provide end‑to‑end legal support to trading and commercial teams, taking ownership of contract structuring and negotiation for complex energy and commodities transactions. The role works closely with commercial, risk, credit, and operations stakeholders to ensure deals are executable, compliant, and aligned with established risk parameters. The Senior Counsel will also oversee legal support resources and manage select external advisors as needed.

Act as the primary legal advisor for commodity trading, marketing, and commercial activities, offering practical, real‑time guidance in a fast‑moving transactional environment
Independently structure, draft, review, and negotiate a high volume of sophisticated energy and commodities agreements, including:
Credit support documents and related amendments
Analyze and advise on contractual and legal risk associated with trading activities, including credit exposure, collateral mechanisms, netting, close‑out, and default provisions
Collaborate closely with commercial, risk, credit, compliance, and operations teams to ensure transactions are legally sound, enforceable, and operationally viable
Interpret and apply applicable regulatory and compliance requirements impacting U.Supervise and develop legal support staff (e.g., paralegals), including work allocation, review, and performance development
Coordinate and manage outside counsel on specialized or non‑routine matters (e.g., regulatory, compliance, or disputes), while retaining responsibility for legal strategy and outcomes
Develop and maintain standard templates, internal playbooks, and legal guidance tailored to trading and commercial operations

S. law school
Approximately 7–10+ years of relevant legal experience, with strong preference for:
Energy, commodities, or complex commercial transactions
In‑house counsel or law firm experience supporting trading or commercial businesses
Demonstrated experience advising trading, marketing, or commercial teams in a dynamic, deal‑driven environment
Solid working knowledge of corporate law and governance fundamentals
Ability to operate independently with minimal supervision on routine and complex matters
Familiarity with or interest in leveraging AI tools within a legal function is a plus

Must be authorized and licensed to practice law in Texas
