Travel ICU RN - Night Shift RN

American Traveler is seeking an experienced ICU RN for a 13-week night shift travel contract in Arizona, requiring strong critical care skills including EKG interpretation, vent management, and drip titration.
Job Details
- Acute care hospital ICU setting with a Critical Care service line encompassing a 12-bed CVICU, 8-bed COVID ICU, 8-bed MS ICU, and a 16-bed PCU (up to 20 with double occupancy),
- Patient population includes COVID requiring manual proning, low-level neuro, EVD, DKA, sepsis, ARF, CRRT, rhabdomyolysis, post-MI, detox, chest tubes, art lines, SWAN, post-surgical, Impella, TAVR, cardiac surgical, VAD devices, STEMI, PCI, CEA, and IABP,
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1-2 in the ICU based on acuity and staffing; PCU ratio is 1:3-4,
- Charting is performed in Cerner,
- Nihon Kohden telemetry monitors are used; RNs are responsible for reading their own telemetry strips,
- Respiratory equipment in use includes ventilators, BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, Vapotherm, and Glidescopes (used during intubation),
- RNs are required to titrate all critical care drips including pressors (levophed), paralytics, sedation (propofol), anti-arrhythmics, dopamine, heparin, and argatroban,
- 12-hour night shifts (7p-7a), with schedules made 4 weeks in advance; some self-scheduling available subject to manager approval,
- Every other weekend (EOW) requirement; weekend nights include Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday nights depending on rotation,
- Holiday coverage is required - travelers are expected to work 1 winter holiday and the eve of another holiday,
- First to float; may float to the PCU, MST, or East Campus ICU/PCU per staff rotation,
- Low-census call may occur approximately once every 6 weeks; no scheduled on-call requirement,
Job Requirements
- Active AZ RN license or Compact (NLC) RN license required; pending licenses will not be accepted,
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; pending certifications will not be accepted,
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required,
- Strong EKG/dysrhythmia interpretation skills required,
- Ability to troubleshoot and assist with weaning ventilators required,
- Experience with drip titration of critical care medications required,
- Ability to interpret ABGs required,
- IABP and Prismaflex CRRT experience preferred,
- Experience with EVD, chest tubes, art lines, and SWAN catheter strongly preferred,
- Travelers with open heart surgery experience may be assigned to fresh open heart patients if skills are verified,
- BSN not required,
- Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility (driver's license used to verify permanent address),
- Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity-affiliated facility within the past year (PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered),
- Driver's license copy required for consideration,
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years - both must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire,
Additional Information
- Travelers will rotate across all ICU areas within the Critical Care service line and should have broad critical care experience,
- Travelers with verified open heart surgery skills may be assigned fresh post-op open heart patients,
- Orientation consists of 8 hours of general hospital orientation, one 12-hour precepted shift on the unit, and a second 12-hour shift with a buddy nurse available for questions; additional orientation may be provided for specialized skills such as open heart or CRRT,
- Candidates must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam with a score of 80% or higher within two attempts prior to contract confirmation; failure to do so results in a 6-month DNU status for CommonSpirit Arizona facilities,
- A pass/fail sterile technique test for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes is administered on the first day of orientation,
- Intensivists are in-house 24/7 with NP support; RT covers all areas but is not dedicated to the ICU around the clock; no nurse aides on the unit,
- Scrubs of any professional color are acceptable (no camouflage); the unit is transitioning to navy scrubs in October,
- RTO of fewer than 7 days is acceptable; holiday requests are not approved for this position,
- First-time travelers will not be considered for this position given the broad critical care skill set and independent practice required
