Part-Time Student Chemist

You will serve as a CHEMIST in the ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY of NAVAL STATION.

Help

You will serve as the chemist responsible for the qualitive and quantitative chemical analyses in a wide variety of environmental samples.

You will develop the methodology, test procedures, and the sequence to follow for complete chemical analyses

You will maintain the quality assurance program to verify the validity of test results for accuracy and precision.

You must obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance and access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI). Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. You will be subject to random testing.

You must acknowledge in writing that you are accepting an appointment in the DCIPS (excepted service) which does not confer competitive status, prior to appointment.

Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. 1) Developing analytical and testing methods for environmental samples; 2) Applying qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses in a wide variety of inorganic environmental samples; 3) Calibrating and operating analytical instruments, such as Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission (ICP) spectrometer, Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GS/MS), Oil/Grease system, flash point, etc.; 4) Providing chemical analytical service/expertise to solve hazardous waste disposal and environmental pollution problems; and 5) Searching pertinent literature and references to find and perform analyses on environmental samples. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: 1 Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

Combination of education and experience course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

D. or equivalent doctoral degree with a major study in a field related to the position.

Three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree with a major study in a field related to the position
