RN - PCU

● About Facility:
o Level 1 Trauma Designation
o Teaching Hospital
Unit Information:
2 years PCU RN experience
o Step Down ICU patients
o Common diagnoses: respiratory failure, renal failure, sepsis, GI Bleed, DKA, hypotension, hypertension, stroke, pneumonia, cancer, ARDS, overdoses
o Step downs from ICU and ER admissions
o RN: 1:3-4
o CNA: 1-2 per shift
● o CCRN (critical care nursing certification) preferred but not required
o Monitoring and management of invasive lines i.e. arterial lines, central venous lines, pulse oximetry, intracranial pressure monitoring
Yes - assist with VS, Glucose Checks, baths, feeding, ambulating patients, assisting turning patients, hourly rounding, transporting patients as needed (Hospital has designated Transport Team); Unit secretary on unit 7a-11p; then house wide call secretary 11p-7a
o Charge nurse – may have patients
o Phlebotomy? Most units are lab collect phlebotomy; nurses drawn from CVLs
o Resource Nurse? Yes, we have discharge nurses, resource team floats to all units
o Hospitalist 24/7? o Intensivist 24/7? o Telemetry monitoring/tech? Central Telemetry Unit

o EMR: EPIC
o Unit specific equipment:
▪ Orientation (facility and unit):
o Weekend rotation: 5-6 weekend shifts out of 12 (on a 6-week schedule)
o Holiday Expectations: work one shift of each major holiday (Thanksgiving Day or day after + 12/24 or 12/25 + 12/31 or 1/1
o Shift times: 12-hour shifts 7A-7P or 7P-7A
o Scrub Color: RN- Navy
o Unit Culture: busy but work as team
