Epidemiologist, Health Sciences (Remote)

We are seeking an Epidemiologist to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA. The CDC is at the front lines of public health threats to Americans and serves the American public who rely on accurate data, health guidance, and preventive measures. The CDC also serves healthcare providers, researchers, policymakers, businesses, state and local health agencies, and global health partners that rely on CDC for data and guidance to scale improved health outcomes. Our core practice areas include: clinical research; vaccine research, microbiology and infectious disease research, development and production; global health security; and HIV/AIDS programs. This is a forecasted position, and it is contingent upon contract award.
Provide epidemiology expertise for public health programs and projects, including statistical analysis, health care planning, surveillance systems, and public health improvement.
Support the maintenance of a joint laboratory-epidemiologic database and generate monthly surveillance reports.
Provide input into the development, review, and revision of data collection forms.
Analyze study or project implementation and measure the outcomes of projects.
Perform basic statistical analyses with a statistical package such as SAS, SPSS, Epi-Info, or Stata.
Participate in the design and implementation of research and epidemiologic studies. This may include field/site visits, patient/subject enrollment and interviews, database creation, data entry, and management, and other tasks crucial to the success of the study.
Participate in the day-to-day work of the unit, including responding to public inquiries.
Communicate with staff at CDC and those at remote sites as needed to ensure compliance with protocol, secure data transfer and processing;
Attend recurrent and/or scheduled calls with sites, coordinators, CDC team meetings, annual meetings, and other ad hoc meetings when necessary to provide information on current activities or to become familiar with current activities. Communicate information for technical and other study information/requirements in a clear manner to and between project site staff, CDC technical support staff, statisticians, and epidemiologists.
Manage or perform routine functions in epidemiologic databases. Conduct weekly downloads and analysis of data and contribute to preparation of scientific articles.
Prepare, summarize, and present data in tables, figures, and graphs. Management of data shall be in a database management system such as SAS or Microsoft Access.
Participate in writing comprehensive statistical and analytic reports from major studies.
Produce work products using software applications most commonly used at CDC including SAS and Access. Assist with IRB submissions/revisions, as needed, and collaborate to develop joint analyses and publications.
Participate in the Scientific Discussion Group as an audience member or presenter to enhance epidemiologic analyses conducted. Attend and participate in other scientific meetings as needed to support epidemiologic activities within the program.
Present at conferences and scientific meetings, when required.
Provide input into the development, review, and revision of data collection forms.

Advise and assist with need for further investigation or other public health action on the basis of results of literature review and assessment of current data.
Assist with defining, assessing and understanding the health status of population, disease burden and risk factors for diseases under program jurisdiction.
Make recommendations regarding the validity of epidemiologic data and data gaps by applying in-depth expert knowledge of epidemiologic principles and methods in the field of and prevention of diseases under program jurisdiction.
Advise and assist with policy formulation and program development.
Minimum of a Master's Degree in the fields of Health Informatics, Data Science, Epidemiology, Statistics, or Economics. Extensive knowledge of national and international healthcare standards for clinical interoperability, such as HL7, OMOP, and FHIR, and leveraging those standards, common data models, and clinical quality measures for public health surveillance.
Experience in assessing relevant data systems (e.g., HealthVerity, Premier, Truveta, IQVIA, PCORNET, MarketScan, and similar aggregated systems/products) and making recommendations for use of data for surveillance purposes.
Expertise in defining, analyzing, and monitoring chronic disease indicators in sources such as electronic health records, healthcare claims, and clinical and pharmaceutical data collected by commercial data partners and federal partners such as CMS, HRSA, and the VA.
Expertise in managing, cleaning, wrangling, analyzing, and visualizing healthcare big data using programming languages (R, Python, SQL) and tools such as PowerBI.
Experience with cloud computing and leveraging distributed computing to analyze large relational databases is highly desirable, as is experience with clinical case definitions (electronic phenotypes).
