Job Summary

The Locksmith is responsible for performing skilled work involvingthe installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety ofbuilding lock systems, including cylindrical, unit, mortise, rim,and reload cylinders. The role also involves repairing andreplacing panic hardware, door closers, desk locks, file cabinetlocks, display case locks, electrified hardware and othercontainer-type locking mechanisms.

The Locksmith cuts new and replacement keys, picks locks with lostor broken keys, and performs emergency lock repairs as needed. Thisposition is also responsible for maintaining an adequate inventoryof locksmith tools, supplies, and equipment; monitoring andreporting maintenance issues to appropriate personnel; managing andupdating master key records and documentation software; andevaluating hardware to ensure compliance with security standardsand state fire codes. The Locksmith performs additional relatedduties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Locksmith Access Technician I

Perform entry-level locksmith tasks and assist in resolving basiclock and key service requests. Help with campus-wide key and locksystems and card access. Assist in preparing resources and toolsfor routine tasks and participate in training to developproficiency in the key and lock systems, card access and safetyprotocols. Maintain accurate records of preventative maintenanceand repair schedules under supervision. Closely adhere to industryand university best practices and safety requirements.

Locksmith Access Technician II

Independently perform locksmith services and support advancedmaster key systems. Collaborate with campus departments to evaluateand implement key and lock systems and card access to meet University standards. Use test equipment to evaluate systemfunctionality and troubleshoot issues. Provide recommendations forsystem improvements and ensure accurate documentation ofmaintenance activities. Closely adhere to industry and universitybest practices and safety requirements.

Locksmith Access Technician III

Manage complex locksmith tasks and lead the design, installation,and maintenance of complex master key systems and software. Selectand procure system hardware and components to meet project schedules. Use advanced test equipment to analyze systemperformance and recommend improvements. Supervise programming ensuring all security protocols are operational. Train othertechnicians and operators, provide work direction, and overseecompliance with preventative maintenance schedules. Closely adhereto industry and university best practices and safetyrequirements.

Locksmith Access Technician IV

Lead the design, engineering, and management of campus-wideadvanced master key systems and software. Work with FacilitiesManagement, Campus Planning, Construction Management, PublicSafety, Industry Partners and other departments to design andimplement comprehensive master key systems meeting University and U.L. standards. Use advanced test equipment to analyze systemperformance and recommend improvements. Act as project leadership,train technicians, provide technical guidance, and oversee dailyoperation and preventative maintenance schedules for all systems. Closely adhere to industry and university best practices and safetyrequirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years full-time general locksmithing experience or equivalency(one year of education can be substituted for two years of relatedwork experience); ability to understand the basic requirements ofmaster keying systems; and ability to develop appropriate key codesto fit existing master key systems required. Experience with manualand computerized key record and filing systems; and demonstratedhuman relations and effective communication skills are alsorequired. Dependent upon department of assignment, a valid Utahdriver's license may be required. Graduation from an approvedlocksmithing school is preferred. This position has noresponsibility for providing care to patients.

Preferences

Locksmith Access Technician I: High school diploma orequivalent

Locksmith Access Technician II: 1-2 years of experience inlocksmithing or access control

Locksmith Access Technician III: 3-5 years of locksmith/accesscontrol experience

Locksmith Access Technician IV: 5+ years of professional locksmithand access control experience

Two years of full-time general locksmith experience, orequivalent (one year of education may substitute for two years ofrelated work experience).

Strong understanding of master key system fundamentals, with theability to develop key codes compatible with existing master keysystems.

Experience using both manual and computerized key record andfiling systems.

Demonstrated interpersonal and effective communicationskills.

Mechanically inclined and able to work collaboratively as part ofa team.
