The Pipefitter position is located at the Bath VA Medical Center in Bath, NY (VISN-2). This position modifies, maintains, and repairs a variety of high, medium, and low pressure piping systems.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element – which usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision, Ability to interpret instructions – specifications – etc. (Other Than Blueprint Reading), Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment, Knowledge of equipment assembly – installation – and repair, Measurement and layout technical practices, Troubleshooting. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35‑40 hours per week. Part‑time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Duties
Inspect, adjust, clean, and repair plumbing fixtures and systems including steam‑operated equipment, heating and water systems, kitchen and laundry equipment, air compressors, medical compressed‑air systems, vacuum systems, oxygen systems, and natural gas distribution systems.
Make safety and preventive maintenance inspections of utility systems.
Apply accepted steam fitting and pipe‑fitting trade methods and techniques to solve issues on site.
Conduct preventive maintenance activities on steam fitting and plumbing equipment throughout a health care facility.
Interpret and apply building plans and blueprints.
Utilize shop mathematics and lay out angles, arcs, and circles.
Conduct repairs and installations using ladders, scaffolding, and platforms in hard‑to‑reach places.
Lay out and install piping, risers, and flexible branches at the proper level and incline.
Test systems and equipment for proper circulation, flow, pressure, leak‑free joints, and proper drainage.
Diagnose plumbing system malfunctions by isolating the problem, checking through the system, and making appropriate repairs or modifications.
Other duties as assigned.
Work schedule: 8 am–4:30 pm.
Physical requirements: stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions; work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the systems and equipment are in hard‑to‑reach places; handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds (occasionally more); work inside and outside, often dirty, dusty, greasy, and smelly; frequent exposure to uncomfortable heat; exposure to strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, infections; occasional exposure to broken bones.
